Role of edge effects and fluid depth in azimuthal Faraday waves

P. Wilson et al.

Summary: This study investigates Faraday waves generated by mechanically vibrating a cylindrical container. Frequency scans are used to measure the acceleration threshold for the appearance of surface waves, and the spatial structure of the waves is determined using imaging techniques. Theoretical models are developed to calculate the natural oscillations of different materials in the cylindrical container under varying boundary conditions, with good agreement between theoretical predictions and experimental observations.

The spatial structure of electrostatically forced Faraday waves

Summary: The instability of the interface between a dielectric and conducting liquid under a spatially homogeneous interface-normal time-periodic electric field is studied. Experimental and theoretical methods are used to investigate the spatial structure of the excited Faraday waves and the influence of liquid viscosities on the instability. The study confirms good agreement with theoretical predictions and provides insights into controlling electrostatically driven instabilities.

Nature of branching in electrohydrodynamic instability

Summary: An electric field applied to a bilayer of fluids with stable stratification and gravity can cause an instability resulting in interfacial deflections. In the case of a perfect conductor under a perfect dielectric, weak nonlinear analysis shows that sinusoidal deflections will only lead to subcritical breakup, as geometrically inaccessible wave numbers prevent supercritical saturation.
