Spatiotemporal distancing of crops reduces pest pressure while maintaining conservation biocontrol in oilseed rape

Summary: A field experiment in Estonia showed that if the distance from the previous year's oilseed rape (OSR) crop is over 500 meters, the infestation rates of pollen beetles and cabbage seed weevils in the current OSR fields are significantly reduced. The biocontrol provided by parasitic wasps is not greatly affected by distance. Spatial and temporal separation of OSR fields can effectively reduce pest pressure.

Modelling the factors affecting the spatiotemporal distribution of cabbage stem flea beetle (Psylliodes chrysocephala) larvae in winter oilseed rape (Brassica napus) in the UK

Summary: The study found that the number of larvae of cabbage stem flea beetle in oilseed rape significantly increased in the UK after the ban of neonicotinoid insecticides. It was also discovered that crops sown later and larger fields had fewer larvae when the insecticides were available, but bigger fields tended to have more larvae after the ban. Additionally, wet and mild/hot Septembers were associated with higher larval numbers when neonicotinoids were available.

Summary: The increase in oilseed rape cultivation has led to an increase in insect pests, and the withdrawal of synthetic insecticides and the development of insecticide resistance have resulted in crop failures and decreased yields. It is important for Integrated Pest Management approaches to be incorporated into new EU and UK policies and to incentivize the development and use of necessary tools by farmers.

Development of a pest threshold decision support system for minimising damage to winter wheat from wheat bulb fly, Delia coarctata

Summary: The wheat bulb fly is a significant pest of winter wheat in the UK, with population thresholds set to prevent economically damaging infestations. With the recent withdrawal of insecticides, only a seed treatment is available for chemical control, leading to an increasing reliance on non-chemical methods. Two predictive models have been developed to better manage the pest, showing improved accuracy in predicting population levels and crop tolerance against the pest. Further validation and development of these models are needed for a future decision support system.
