Effects of sleep restriction on the sleep electroencephalogram of adolescents

Ian G. Campbell et al.

Summary: Modifying time in bed successfully adjusted total sleep time, with shorter sleep durations resulting in increased delta power in both NREM and REM sleep, and decreased alpha power particularly in NREM sleep. Furthermore, sleep restriction significantly reduced sigma EEG activity and production rate in NREM sleep, indicating insufficient sleep recovery. These findings suggest that even modest changes in time in bed can impact adolescent sleep biology and waking cognitive function.

Maturational trajectories of non-rapid eye movement slow wave activity and odds ratio product in a population-based sample of youth

Anna Ricci et al.

Summary: The study found that from childhood to adolescence, SWA shows a maturation decline, with females declining faster than males and more mature adolescents experiencing a more significant decrease in SWA. In contrast, the changes in ORP were not influenced by sex or pubertal status, showing a gradual increasing trajectory.

Summary: This study found that students in schools with later start times were more likely to get sufficient sleep, while students in schools with earlier start times were more likely to attempt suicide, showing an association between school start times and student mental health.
