Future therapies for cystic fibrosis

Summary: With the introduction of small molecule, mutation-specific drugs, people with cystic fibrosis are undergoing transformative change as these drugs can restore function of the defective protein CFTR. However, not all genetic variants are suitable for mutation-specific drugs and these drugs also do not correct all the clinical manifestations of the disease. More research is needed to improve treatments for cystic fibrosis.

European Respiratory Society statement for defining respiratory exacerbations in children and adolescents with bronchiectasis for clinical trials

Summary: Bronchiectasis is increasingly diagnosed in children and adolescents, and recurrent respiratory exacerbations are common in this population. These exacerbations are associated with negative impacts on quality of life, long-term clinical outcomes, and financial burden. The European Respiratory Society (ERS) formed a multidisciplinary task force to establish standardized definitions of respiratory exacerbations for clinical research in pediatric bronchiectasis. Through a systematic literature review, parent survey, and Delphi approach involving 299 physicians from 54 countries, the task force obtained consensus on four definitions of respiratory exacerbations. The task force recommends using these internationally derived definitions for future clinical research in pediatric bronchiectasis.

Quality standards for managing children and adolescents with bronchiectasis: an international consensus

Summary: This article discusses the increasing global burden of bronchiectasis in children and adolescents, as well as the inequity in resources and standards of care compared to other chronic lung diseases. Based on the European Respiratory Society (ERS) clinical practice guideline, an international consensus of quality standards of care for children and adolescents with bronchiectasis is presented. These standards can be used by parents, patients, healthcare professionals, and health services to improve the quality of care and optimize health outcomes.
