Control of gastrointestinal helminths in small ruminants to prevent anthelmintic resistance: the Italian experience

A statistical framework for calculating prospective sample sizes and classifying efficacy results for faecal egg count reduction tests in ruminants, horses and swine

Summary: The faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT) is a crucial tool for detecting anthelmintic resistance in livestock. This study provides a comprehensive overview of the quantitative issues involved in FECRT and introduces a new approach for determining sample size requirements. The study also presents a classification system for anthelminthic drug efficacy based on a solid statistical framework. The findings of this study will contribute to the upcoming FECRT WAAVP guidelines and are available as open-source software.

A Potential Anthelmintic Phytopharmacological Source of Origanum vulgare (L.) Essential Oil against Gastrointestinal Nematodes of Sheep

Summary: Inappropriate use of anthelmintic drugs has led to anthelmintic resistance in sheep gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) and caused economic losses. This study evaluated the anthelmintic efficacy of oregano essential oil (EO) against sheep GINs and its potential use in veterinary practice. In vitro and in vivo tests were conducted, and no negative effects on the sheep were observed. The results suggest that O. vulgare EO shows potential for the control of sheep GINs and can be considered safe for use in veterinary practice.

Research on lactating dairy sheep in Sardinia, Italy, found that animals with lower BCS had higher gastrointestinal nematode egg counts, particularly in older ewes.

In Vitro Anthelmintic Activity of Isatis tinctoria Extracts against Ewes' Gastrointestinal Nematodes (GINs), a Possible Application for Animal Welfare

Summary: Sheep gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infestation has a limiting effect on sheep farming and milk production in Italy. This study evaluated the in vitro anthelmintic efficacy of extracts from different parts of Isatis tinctoria against ovine GIN. The results showed that these extracts were highly effective in inhibiting egg hatching, suggesting their potential as natural alternatives to antiparasitic drugs.

Anthelmintic Properties of Essential Oils to Control Gastrointestinal Nematodes in Sheep-In Vitro and In Vivo Studies

Use of agro-industrial by-products containing tannins for the integrated control of gastrointestinal nematodes in ruminants

Summary: Previous studies have shown that legume fodders containing condensed tannins can be an option for controlling gastrointestinal nematodes in ruminants and addressing resistance to anthelmintics. Recent research has evaluated the antiparasitic activity of unconventional agro-industrial by-products. This review presents evidence for the antiparasitic effects of tannin-containing agro-industrial by-products and discusses their socio-economic aspects and on-farm use.

In vitro anthelmintic activity of an aqueous extract of Glycyrrhiza glabra and of glycyrrhetinic acid against gastrointestinal nematodes of small ruminants

Summary: This study evaluated the in vitro anthelmintic activity of liquorice root extract and glycyrrhetinic acid against sheep gastrointestinal nematodes. The results suggest that these compounds may have different mechanisms of action, with glycyrrhetinic acid showing higher efficacy than liquorice root extract. The findings encourage further in vivo studies to evaluate the potential use of these compounds as natural dewormers in ruminants.
