A Mesozoic fossil lagerstatte from 250.8 million years ago shows a modern-type marine ecosystem

Xu Dai et al.

Summary: The Guiyang Biota, an exceptionally well-preserved fossil assemblage dating back to 250.83 +/- 0.07/-0.06 million years ago, is discovered in the Daye Formation near Guiyang, South China. It represents the oldest known Mesozoic lagerstatten, appearing only 1.08 +/- 0.08 million years after the severe Permian-Triassic mass extinction. The Guiyang Biota consists of diverse marine organisms, including at least 12 classes and 19 orders, suggesting the rapid rise of modern-type marine ecosystems after the mass extinction event.

High-spatial-resolution measurements of iron isotopes in pyrites by secondary ion mass spectrometry using the new Hyperion-II radio-frequency plasma source

Marie-Noelle Decraene et al.

Summary: Iron isotopic signatures in pyrites are considered as a good proxy for reconstructing paleoenvironmental and local redox conditions. The development of a new brighter radio-frequency plasma ion source enhances the spatial resolution for high-resolution measurements of micrometric pyrites, aiding in the study of sedimentary micro-pyrites to improve our understanding of pyrite precipitation processes and environmental conditions.

Stromatolites from the Lower Triassic Virgin Limestone at Blue Diamond, NV USA: The role of dysoxia, enhanced calcification and nutrient availability in the growth of post-extinction microbialites

Jennifer Mccoy Kirton et al.

Summary: The resurgence of microbialites following the Permian-Triassic mass extinction is attributed to the emptying of ecosystems, decreased burrowing activity, and peculiar Early Triassic ocean chemistry. Different stromatolite morphologies in various regions suggest specific local growth conditions. Analysis of trace metals in shale indicates that mound growth may have been initiated by dysoxic conditions, with evidence of partially oxygenated conditions during stromatolite development. Overall, microbialite growth is controlled by rapid calcification, microbial blooms driven by N-fixing cyanobacteria, and localized oxygen conditions.

Exceptional fossil assemblages confirm the existence of complex Early Triassic ecosystems during the early Spathian

Christopher P. A. Smith et al.

Summary: The mass extinction that occurred at the Permian/Triassic boundary led to a major shift in faunal composition. The debate surrounding the time, space, environment, and ecology of biotic recovery is ongoing due to the limited fossil record. Recent discoveries of diverse assemblages in Idaho and Nevada suggest that the recovery and establishment of complex ecosystems may have happened earlier than previously thought, at least at a regional level.

Latest Smithian (Early Triassic) ammonoid assemblages in Utah (western USA basin) and their implications for regional biostratigraphy, biogeography and placement of the Smithian/Spathian boundary

Arnaud Brayard et al.

Summary: The late Smithian extinction is a major event in the Early Triassic, with the latest Smithian taxa being rare in the western USA basin. New findings in northern Utah confirm the existence of latest Smithian zone, facilitating the identification of the Smithian/Spathian boundary and intra-basin correlation. These new data also support other observed occurrences of Xenoceltites subevolutus throughout most of the late Smithian.

Calibrating the late Smithian (Early Triassic) crisis: New insights from the Nanpanjiang Basin, South China

Xu Dai et al.

Summary: The late Smithian crisis had a severe impact on nekto-pelagic organisms like ammonoids, triggering global biotic and environmental changes. In the Nanpanjiang Basin, the first major biotic crisis and turnover occurred during the late Smithian period, rather than at the Smithian/Spathian boundary. These biotic changes were concurrent with oxygen depletion, supporting the hypothesis that oceanic anoxia played a role in the late Smithian crisis along with climate cooling and oceanic acidification.

Sedimentary pyrite sulfur isotopes track the local dynamics of the Peruvian oxygen minimum zone

Virgil Pasquier et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that variations in sulfur isotope ratios (δS-34(pyr)) in Peruvian margin sediments are influenced by Oxygen Minimum Zone intensification/expansion and organic matter deposition. Higher microbial sulfate reduction rates result in more effective drawdown and S-34-enrichment of residual porewater sulfate and sulfide, which is preserved in pyrite. These findings emphasize the importance of local environmental changes in shaping sulfur isotope ratios.
