Exceptional terrestrial warmth around 4200-2800 years ago in Northwest China

Qingfeng Jiang et al.

Summary: Based on the temperature records from Northwestern China, this study reveals exceptional terrestrial warmth during the Bronze Age (4200-2800 years ago), which coincided with the long-term Holocene cooling trend. This climate reorganization, associated with high solar activity, has important implications for understanding the climate background of cultural developments in the Bronze Age.

Holocene moisture variations in arid central Asia: Reassessment and reconciliation

Shengqian Chen et al.

Summary: During the past two decades, there have been numerous studies on Holocene moisture variations in arid central Asia, but these studies have yielded contradictory results. This study compiled 36 reliable records of Holocene moisture evolution in arid central Asia, revealing an overall long-term wetting trend. It also found that the contradictory variations were mainly due to proxy ambiguity.

Decoupled paleosol-based proxies in Chinese loess deposits: Role of leaching and illuviation processes

Xianqiang Meng et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the influences of leaching-illuviation processes on paleosol-based proxy systems in multiple loess-paleosol sections on the Chinese Loess Plateau. The correlations between pedogenic and chemical weathering proxies vary significantly under different rainfall conditions. Leaching-illuviation processes can explain these discrepancies, and the correlation coefficient between magnetic susceptibility and chemical weathering proxies can be used to assess the pristineness of paleosol-based proxies and the intensity of leaching-illuviation processes.

General Holocene warming trend in arid Central Asia indicated by soil isoprenoid tetraethers

Yanwu Duan et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of temperature and precipitation on the distribution of archaeal isoprenoid glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (iGDGTs) in soil transects in Arid Central Asia (ACA). The results show that mean annual air temperature (MAAT) is the main driver of the distribution of soil iGDGTs, and the TEX86 proxy exhibits a significant positive correlation with MAAT. Furthermore, changes in archaeal community structure are detected in the soil samples, confirming the influence of temperature on the distribution of iGDGTs.

Increasing summer precipitation in arid Central Asia linked to the weakening of the East Asian summer monsoon in the recent decades

Chunzhu Chen et al.

Summary: This study reexamines water vapor sources for arid Central Asia and identifies two main sources: westerly water vapor from the North Atlantic and monsoonal water vapor from the tropical Indian Ocean and South China Sea. The monsoonal transport accounts for 81% of the total variance in precipitation variability. Weakened East Asian summer monsoon results in increased contribution of monsoonal water vapor transport, enhancing summer precipitation in arid Central Asia.

Soil moisture-atmosphere feedbacks mitigate declining water availability in drylands

Sha Zhou et al.

Summary: Soil moisture strongly influences future changes in precipitation minus evapotranspiration, particularly in drylands. A negative feedback from soil moisture can offset a significant portion of the expected decline in dryland precipitation minus evapotranspiration, mainly by regulating evapotranspiration and atmospheric moisture transport.

Significant influence of Northern Hemisphere high latitude climate on appeared precession rhythm of East Asian summer monsoon after Mid-Brunhes Transition interglacials recorded in the Chinese loess

Xianqiang Meng et al.

Summary: A high-resolution East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) precipitation record from North China over the past 720 kyr shows periodicity supporting the hypothesis of high-latitude climate forcing, with Arctic perennial sea ice playing a significant role in decreasing EASM precipitation during post-Mid-Brunhes Transition interglacials. Additionally, EASM intensity during warm Marine Isotope Stages is related to moisture transport from the warming tropical ocean.

The influence of ice sheet and solar insolation on Holocene moisture evolution in northern Central Asia

Jianghu Lan et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the moisture conditions in northern Central Asia during the early Holocene were controlled by the position of the mid-latitude Westerlies, while persistent drought conditions during the middle Holocene were caused by the northward migration of these Westerlies. The recent southward movement has resulted in a relatively wetter Central Asia region.

No evidence for an anti-phased Holocene moisture regime in mountains and basins in Central Asian: Records from Ili loess, Xinjiang

Jia Jia et al.

Summary: This study reveals a consistent wetting trend throughout the Holocene in arid Central Asia, based on analysis of two loess sections from Tienshan Mountain slope and two additional loess records from the intermontane arid basin. This finding contradicts the hypothesis of an anti-phased pattern of moisture/precipitation change between the humid mountains and the arid basins in the region.

Distinct Holocene precipitation trends over arid Central Asia and linkages to westerlies and Asian monsoon

Zhengguo Shi et al.

Summary: The response of precipitation in Central Asia since the mid Holocene shows significant regional differences, mainly influenced by the westerlies. Annual precipitation has increased in the Balkhash-Altai region, while decreased in the Turan Plain, Mongolia-Baikal, and Tarim Basin. Summer precipitation changes are most pronounced, with the southward shift of westerly jet and wave-like anomalies in meridional winds playing a key role.
