Connecting DCX, COMT and FMR1 in social behavior and cognitive impairment

Anna Delprato et al.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed the roles of DCX, COMT, and FMR1 genes in hippocampal neurogenesis associated with neurodevelopmental disorders related to intellectual disability and social behavior. The findings suggest that these genes may converge at Wnt signaling, neuron migration, and axon and dendrite morphogenesis in relation to these disorders.

Inflammation From Peripheral Organs to the Brain: How Does Systemic Inflammation Cause Neuroinflammation?

Yuanjie Sun et al.

Summary: Neuroinflammation, which contributes to neurological and psychiatric diseases, can be caused by various factors including viral infection, autoimmune disease, inflammation from peripheral organs, mental stress, metabolic disorders, and lifestyle. The mechanisms of neuroinflammation caused by inflammation of peripheral organs involve disruption of the blood-brain barrier, activation of glial cells associated with systemic immune activation, and effects on autonomic nerves via the organ-brain axis.

Microglial Inflammatory-Metabolic Pathways and Their Potential Therapeutic Implication in Major Depressive Disorder

Reza Rahimian et al.

Summary: Increasing evidence suggests that neuroinflammation plays a critical role in the development of major depressive disorder (MDD). Microglia, as the immune cells in the brain, can recognize pathogens or damaged cells and activate cytotoxic responses, exacerbating damage to brain cells. Chronic priming of microglia in MDD may contribute to depressive symptoms and impairments in neuroplasticity. Modifying microglia phenotype by regulating inflammatory pathways could be a potential therapeutic approach for controlling neuroinflammation in MDD.

Microglia in depression: current perspectives

Xiaoning Jia et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the role of microglia in the etiology of depression, discussing the dynamic states of microglia, the correlative and causal evidence of microglial abnormalities in depression, possible mechanisms of how microglia sense depression-related stress and modulate depression state, and how antidepressive therapies affect microglia. Understanding the role of microglia in depression may lead to new treatment strategies for fighting against this mental illness.

Neuroinflammation and microglial activation in Alzheimer disease: where do we go from here?

Fangda Leng et al.

Summary: Microglial activation and neuroinflammation play important roles in Alzheimer's disease, affecting disease progression and pathologies. Current research focuses on the interplay between neuroinflammation and amyloid and tau pathologies, with a specific interest in modulating microglia as a therapeutic strategy for AD.

Experimental Chronic Prostatitis/Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome Increases Anxiety-Like Behavior: The Role of Brain Oxidative Stress, Serum Corticosterone, and Hippocampal Parvalbumin-Positive Interneurons

Nikola Sutulovic et al.

Summary: The study found that rats with CP/CPPS exhibited scrotal allodynia and prostatitis, along with significantly increased anxiety-like behavior compared to sham-operated rats. These behavior patterns were correlated with increased brain oxidative stress, elevated serum corticosterone levels, and decreased number of hippocampal PV+ neurons.

The positive effects of running exercise on hippocampal astrocytes in a rat model of depression

Yue Li et al.

Summary: Running exercise has been shown to alleviate depressive symptoms and protect hippocampal astrocytes in depressed rats. The positive effects of running exercise on astrocytes and the generation of new astrocytes in the hippocampus might be important structural bases for the antidepressant effects of running exercise.
