Photoinduced, metal- and photosensitizer-free decarboxylative C-H (amino)alkylation of heteroarenes in a sustainable solvent

Jun Xu et al.

Summary: A metal- and photosensitizer-free protocol for decarboxylative C-H (amino)alkylation of heteroarenes using carboxylic acids as reagents has been developed. The reaction is performed in a sustainable solvent (dimethyl carbonate, DMC) and is tolerant to various carboxylic acids, providing the target products in acceptable yields. Importantly, this approach can efficiently convert amino acids and carboxyl-containing drugs into desired products, offering a green and efficient method for the conversion of abundant feedstock materials into medically relevant drug-like moieties.

Visible-light-induced direct perfluoroalkylation/heteroarylation of [1.1.1]propellane to diverse bicyclo[1.1.1]pentanes (BCPs) under metal and photocatalyst-free conditions

Jiashun Zhu et al.

Summary: A green and novel multi-component reaction for direct perfluoroalkylation/heteroarylation of [1.1.1]propellane with heteroarenes and perfluoroalkyl iodines is described. This transformation is facilitated by visible light in the absence of any transition-metal catalysts and photocatalysts. Various heteroarenes and perfluoroalkyl iodines are well compatible, providing the corresponding products in moderate-to-good yields. The control experiments demonstrate that a radical-relay mechanism is responsible for the cascade reaction. Such a methodology offers an efficient and practical access to diverse 1-perfluoroalkyl-3-heteroaryl bicyclo[1.1.1]pentanes (BCPs) with the potential for various applications in organic synthesis.

?-Amino Radical-Mediated Difunctionalization of Alkenes with Polyhaloalkanes and N-Heteroarenes

Jiabin Shen et al.

Summary: In this study, a mild and practical protocol for the alpha-perchloroalkyl beta-heteroarylation of alkenes using chloroform as the dichloromethyl source was reported. The reaction was mediated by alpha-amino radicals and resulted in the introduction of chloroalkyl motifs into N-heteroarenes. Various substrates were successfully converted under mild reaction conditions, providing moderate to good yields of the desired products. Control experiments confirmed the importance of the in situ generated alpha-amino radicals as key intermediates in this transformation.

Metallaphotoredox: The Merger of Photoredox and Transition Metal Catalysis

Amy Y. Chan et al.

Summary: The merger of photoredox catalysis with transition metal catalysis, known as metallaphotoredox catalysis, has become an important part of synthetic methodology. It combines the bond formation capability of transition metal catalysis with the utility of photoinduced electron and energy transfer processes. Photocatalytic substrate activation allows the involvement of simple starting materials in metal-mediated bond-forming processes, while electron or energy transfer with organometallic intermediates provides a complementary activation mode to traditional catalytic platforms.

α-Amino Radical Halogen Atom Transfer Agents for Metallaphotoredox-Catalyzed Cross-Electrophile Couplings of Distinct Organic Halides

Xianhai Tian et al.

Summary: In this study, alpha-Amino radicals from simple tertiary amines were used as halogen atom transfer (XAT) agents in metallaphotoredox catalysis for cross-electrophile couplings of organic bromides with organic iodides. The results showed that this XAT strategy efficiently generated carbon radicals from various partners and enabled six diverse C-C bond formations through nickel catalysis with different organobromides. Furthermore, this cross coupling reaction could be achieved with either organic bromide or iodide as limiting reactant, which is beneficial for late-stage functionalization of complex molecules.
