Enhancing Electrocatalytic Hydrodechlorination through Interfacial Microenvironment Modulation

Zhimin Fan et al.

Summary: Electrochemical reduction (ER) is a promising method for pollutant removal, but its application is limited by slow reaction kinetics and side reactions. In this study, the role of interfacial hydrophilicity in determining ER performance was investigated. It was found that a hydrophobic Pd/C electrocatalyst hindered the diffusion of water and pollutants, leading to decreased mass transfer and decontamination efficiency. However, this dilemma could be overcome by increasing hydrophilicity with hydrophilic polymers, resulting in a significant improvement in the activity and efficiency of the electrocatalyst.

A Convenient and Stable Heterogeneous Nickel Catalyst for Hydrodehalogenation of Aryl Halides Using Molecular Hydrogen

David K. Leonard et al.

Summary: In this study, a nickel-based catalyst supported on titania is used as a safe alternative to expensive and potentially dangerous catalysts for hydrodehalogenation reactions. The catalyst is prepared by depositing nickel(II)/1,10-phenanthroline on titania and subsequent pyrolysis. It is found that this nanostructured catalyst is efficient for the selective hydrodehalogenation of various substrates. The practicality of this catalyst system is demonstrated by successfully dehalogenating environmentally hazardous and polyhalogenated substrates.

Catalytic hydrodehalogenation of halogenated disinfection byproducts for clean drinking water production: A review

Ali K. Ilunga et al.

Summary: Water treatment plants use chlorine to eliminate microorganisms and prevent microbial contamination, but the formation of chlorinated disinfection byproducts poses severe health risks. Traditional water treatment methods can remove most chlorinated byproducts precursors, but may fail to completely eliminate chlorinated DBPs in drinking water at low concentrations. Catalytic hydrodehalogenation is proposed as an efficient approach to completely eradicate chlorinated DBPs in water treatment.

Non-Innocent Role of the Ceria Support in Pd-Catalyzed Halophenol Hydrodehalogenation

Pranjali J. Naik et al.

Summary: The HDH of halophenols is efficiently catalyzed by Pd/CeO2 under mild conditions, involving dissociative adsorption of phenolic hydroxyl onto the support, oxidative addition of the C-halogen bond to Pd, and reductive elimination to give phenol and hydrogen halide. The electron-rich intermediate formed by the dissociative adsorption of the -OH group onto oxygen vacancies of the ceria support facilitates the turnover-limiting reductive elimination step. Insights gained from this study were used to modify reaction conditions for enabling HDH of recalcitrant halides such as fluorides and iodides.
