Revisiting paleoenvironmental analyses and interpretations of organic-rich deposits: The importance of TOC corrections

Bruce S. Hart et al.

Summary: This paper highlights the importance of correcting present-day TOC values to their original values in paleoenvironmental interpretation. The study demonstrates that the difference between present-day TOC values and those at the time of deposition can significantly affect interpretations and argues for presenting a range of possible values due to uncertainties in defining the original organic matter type and other unknown factors. The method used to restore TOC has minimal impact on the interpretations.

C:N ratios of bulk soils and particle-size fractions: Global trends and major drivers

Helen C. S. Amorim et al.

Summary: C:N ratios are widely used as indicators for the chemical composition and quality of soil organic matter, but their response to environmental factors is still poorly understood. This study collected data from 74 studies conducted between 1980 and 2019, covering a wide range of environmental settings, and found that soil organic carbon and total nitrogen contents were mainly controlled by macroscale climatic drivers, while soil C:N ratios were more responsive to microscale factors such as soil particle-size distribution.

Hydroclimatic vulnerability of peat carbon in the central Congo Basin

Yannick Garcin et al.

Summary: The forested swamps in the central Congo Basin store a significant amount of carbon in peat, and their vulnerability to climate change and carbon loss is examined in this study. Analyses of peat cores reveal a pattern of accumulation and decomposition, driven by climate shifts and changes in plant taxa. The results suggest that these peatlands may be near a threshold where increased droughts, potentially caused by human carbon emissions, could lead to significant carbon losses.
