As a Novel Tumor Suppressor, LHPP Promotes Apoptosis by Inhibiting the PI3K/AKT Signaling Pathway in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Shanshan Liu et al.

Summary: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a common malignant tumor of the head and neck with a poor prognosis and unsatisfactory treatment. This study found that the protein histidine phosphatase LHPP plays an important role in the development of OSCC. LHPP inhibits the growth and migration of OSCC by decreasing the activity of the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway and promoting apoptosis.

Hallmarks of Cancer: New Dimensions

Douglas Hanahan

Summary: The concept of the hallmarks of cancer is a tool for simplifying the complexity of cancer phenotypes and genotypes into basic principles. This article proposes phenotypic plasticity and disrupted differentiation as distinct hallmark capabilities, and discusses nonmutational epigenetic reprogramming and polymorphic microbiomes as enabling characteristics. Additionally, the importance of senescent cells in the tumor microenvironment is highlighted. The integrative concept of the hallmarks of cancer helps in understanding the mechanisms of cancer development and applying that knowledge to cancer medicine.

LncRNA LINC00525 activates HIF-1α through miR-338-3p / UBE2Q1 / β-catenin axis to regulate the Warburg effect in colorectal cancer

Fanqi Meng et al.

Summary: This article reports that LINC00525, a hypoxia-responsive lncRNA, is essential for hypoxia-enhanced glycolysis in colorectal cancer cells. It was found that LINC00525 promotes UBE2Q1 expression by binding miR-338-3p, leading to the activation of HIF-1α and enhanced glycolysis under hypoxic conditions.

Comprehensive Analysis of CDK1-Associated ceRNA Network Revealing the Key Pathways LINC00460/LINC00525-Hsa-Mir-338-FAM111/ZWINT as Prognostic Biomarkers in Lung Adenocarcinoma Combined with Experiments

Wen Li et al.

Summary: This study identified long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), microRNAs (miRNAs), and mRNAs associated with CDK1 in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) patients. The regulatory axis of LINC00460/LINC00525-hsa-mir-338-FAM111B/ZWINT was determined, and abnormal up-regulation of FAM111B/ZWINT was found to be related to hypomethylation in LUAD. Results also suggested that FAM111B/ZWINT could affect LUAD development and prognosis by regulating the immune microenvironment and promoting tumor spread through EMT. Potential target medicines for LUAD treatment were identified using bioinformatics analysis.

Long non-coding RNA LINC00525 interacts with miR-31-5p and miR-125a-5p to act as an oncogenic molecule in spinal chordoma

Futai Gong et al.

Summary: The study identified that LINC00525 is highly expressed in spinal chordoma, while miR-31-5p and miR-125a-5p levels are low. Downregulation of LINC00525 inhibited the proliferation, migration, invasion, and promoted apoptosis in spinal chordoma cells, suggesting that LINC00525 targets miR-31-5p and miR-125a-5p to promote tumorigenesis and progression in spinal chordoma.

Non-coding RNAs and potential therapeutic targeting in cancer

Shusuke Toden et al.

Summary: Recent advances have highlighted the importance of non-coding RNAs, particularly microRNAs, in cancer pathogenesis. These ncRNAs have shown potential for therapeutic development in cancer, with early data from pre-clinical studies demonstrating promising results in human trials. While miRNAs have been extensively studied, there is ongoing research to uncover the molecular mechanisms and therapeutic targets of other lesser studied ncRNAs in cancer treatment.

Modes of Regulated Cell Death in Cancer

Elle Koren et al.

Summary: Cell suicide pathways, known as regulated cell death (RCD), are crucial in organismal development, homeostasis, and pathogenesis. This review discusses key RCD modalities such as apoptosis, entosis, necroptosis, pyroptosis, and ferroptosis, and how they serve as a defense mechanism against cancer while also being exploited in oncogenesis. Therapeutic agents that activate RCD are outlined, along with novel strategies for tumor elimination, highlighting the critical importance of RCD in combating cancer.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.
