Multimode Optical Fiber Beam-By-Beam Cleanup

Mario Ferraro et al.

Summary: We introduce and demonstrate all-optical beam switching in graded-index multimode optical fibers. Nonlinear coupling between orthogonally polarized seed and signal beams allows control of the spatial beam quality at the fiber output. We show that a low power control beam can significantly enhance the quality of a high-power multimode signal beam. This concept could be applied in high-power beam delivery and fiber lasers.

Coherence properties of light in highly multimoded nonlinear parabolic fibers under optical equilibrium conditions

Mahmoud A. Selim et al.

Summary: We investigate the coherence characteristics of light in nonlinear graded-index multimode fibers under optical thermal equilibrium conditions. The impact of optical temperature on the spatial mutual coherence function and its associated correlation area is systematically examined. It is demonstrated that the coherence properties of the output field from a multimode nonlinear fiber can be controlled through its optical thermodynamic properties.

Spatiotemporal mode decomposition of ultrashort pulses in linear and nonlinear graded-index multimode fibers

Mario Zitelli et al.

Summary: We developed a spatiotemporal mode decomposition technique to analyze the power distribution of ultrashort pulses in graded-index multimode fibers. Our findings reveal that the power content of beam modes in the dispersive pulse propagation regime follows the Bose-Einstein law, which is a result of power diffusion from mode coupling. In the soliton regime, the output mode power distribution approaches the Rayleigh-Jeans law.

Observation of Light Thermalization to Negative-Temperature Rayleigh-Jeans Equilibrium States in Multimode Optical Fibers

K. Baudin et al.

Summary: This paper reports the observation of Rayleigh-Jeans thermalization of light waves to negative-temperature equilibrium states. The optical wave relaxes to the equilibrium state through its propagation in a multimode optical fiber, where high energy levels are more populated than low energy levels. Experimental results show that negative-temperature speckle beams have a nonmonotonic radial intensity profile.

Observation of photon-photon thermodynamic processes under negative optical temperature conditions

A. L. Marques Muniz et al.

Summary: Statistical mechanics states that a system with no upper bound on its internal energy should have a positive temperature. However, under certain conditions, it is possible to achieve negative temperatures, where higher-order energy states are favored. So far, observing thermodynamic processes in this regime has been challenging, but this study demonstrates isentropic expansion-compression and Joule expansion at negative optical temperatures using purely nonlinear photon-photon interactions. This photonic approach opens up possibilities for exploring all-optical thermal engines and could have implications for other bosonic systems beyond optics, such as cold atoms and optomechanics.

Statistical mechanics of beam self-cleaning in GRIN multimode optical fibers

F. Mangini et al.

Summary: Spatial beam self-cleaning in multimode fibers has attracted research interest due to its potential applications. This study provides a comprehensive theoretical description of beam self-cleaning based on a statistical mechanics model, which is confirmed by extensive experimental characterization. The results demonstrate that beam self-cleaning can be fully understood using the basic laws of statistical mechanics.

Direct observations of thermalization to a Rayleigh-Jeans distribution in multimode optical fibres

Hamed Pourbeyram et al.

Summary: This article introduces the optical nonlinearities in multimodal systems, which result in a thermalization process observed in graded-index fibres. Researchers directly observe the thermalization of mode power distribution using mode-resolved measurement techniques and verify the theoretical predictions.

Thermalization of Orbital Angular Momentum Beams in Multimode Optical Fibers

E. Podivilov et al.

Summary: We investigate the thermalization of light carrying orbital angular momentum in multimode optical fibers induced by nonlinear intermodal interactions. Based on the conservation of the angular momentum, we obtain a generalized Rayleigh-Jeans distribution of asymptotic mode composition. We confirm our predictions through numerical simulations and experiments using holographic mode decomposition of multimode beams. Our work establishes new constraints for achieving spatial beam self-cleaning and provides previously unforeseen insights into the underlying physical mechanisms.

Yuhang Wu et al.

Summary: Experiments were conducted on Kerr beam cleaning in graded-index multimode fiber with sub-nanosecond and femtosecond pulses at wavelengths characterized by normal dispersion. Weak beam cleaning was observed experimentally, with strong temporal evolution of the pulse. Numerical simulations qualitatively matched the experimental trends.

Spatiotemporal beam self-cleaning for high-resolution nonlinear fluorescence imaging with multimode fiber

Moussa Nawell Ould et al.

Summary: Beam self-cleaning in graded-index multimode fibers has shown to improve nonlinear fluorescence imaging by enhancing beam brightness, enabling higher spatial resolution, and increasing the efficiency of nonlinear imaging. The associated spatiotemporal reshaping also allows for supercontinuum generation for large-band NF imaging. Experimental demonstrations have validated these findings in both microscopy and endoscopy configurations.
