Observation of Edge Solitons in Topological Trimer Arrays

Y. Kartashov et al.

Summary: This study reports the experimental observation of nonlinear light localization and edge soliton formation in fs-laser written trimer waveguide arrays. The transition from nontopological to topological phases can be controlled by adjusting the spacing between neighboring trimers. Different types of edge solitons are observed in different phases, and their formation is correlated with the optical power.

Bulk-edge correspondence in the trimer Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model

Adamantios Anastasiadis et al.

Summary: A remarkable feature of the SSH3 model is the existence of localized edge states, but the change in the total number of edge states does not necessarily imply a phase transition. The topological invariant predicted by the 10-fold way classification may not coincide with the actual number of edge states. In this study, a simple alternative approach using sublattice Zak's phase is proposed, which remains valid in the absence of mirror symmetry and noncommensurate chains. The defined bulk quantity is gauge invariant and can be interpreted as the difference in the number of edge states between a reference and a target Hamiltonian. The derivation also predicts exact corrections for finite open chains and invokes a chiral-like symmetry.

Nonlinear tuning of PT symmetry and non-Hermitian topological states

Shiqi Xia et al.

Summary: The study established a nonlinear non-Hermitian topological platform for active tuning of PT symmetry and topological states, revealing the interaction between sensitivity close to exceptional points and the robustness of non-Hermitian topological states. The research provides opportunities for unconventional light manipulation and device applications through single-channel control of global PT symmetry and topology via local nonlinearity.

Topological insulator vertical-cavity laser array

Alex Dikopoltsev et al.

Summary: Topological insulator lasers are semiconductor laser arrays that utilize topology to create a single coherent laser from multiple emitters. The vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) array demonstrated in this study emits at a single frequency and displays interference, showcasing the mutual coherence of the emitters. This experiment highlights the power of topological transport of light, where even with most of the light oscillating vertically, the small in-plane coupling forces individual emitters to behave as a single laser.
