Giant photon momentum locked THz emission in a centrosymmetric Dirac semimetal

Liang Cheng et al.

Summary: In this study, a giant and highly tunable terahertz emission is observed in thin polycrystalline films of the centrosymmetric Dirac semimetal PtSe2. The emitted THz efficiency of PtSe2 is two orders of magnitude larger than ZnTe and approaches that of TaAs. Additionally, the THz emission from PtSe2 is controlled by the incident pump polarization and helicity state.

Topological Surface-Dominated Spintronic THz Emission in Topologically Nontrivial Bi1-xSbx Films

Hanbum Park et al.

Summary: This study investigates the spin-to-charge conversion characteristics of epitaxial Bi1-xSbx films across the topological phase transition using spintronic terahertz spectroscopy. The results reveal that spintronic terahertz emission in Bi1-xSbx films is intense, indicating their potential for spintronic applications. The topological surface state significantly contributes to spin-charge conversion, suggesting that spintronic devices based on topological materials should maximize the utilization of the topological surface state. The study provides insights into the giant spin Hall angle of Bi1-xSbx and expands the application potential of topological materials.

Terahertz wave emission from the trigonal layered PtBi2

Yu Gao et al.

Summary: The study reveals that PtBi2 material can generate broadband terahertz waves under the excitation of femtosecond laser pulses due to the dominant linear photogalvanic effect. The unique electronic structures of PtBi2 play a crucial role in the generation of THz waves, and its nonlinear susceptibility is nearly two orders of magnitude larger than that of traditional nonlinear crystals.

Terahertz Emission Spectroscopy of Ultrafast Coupled Spin and Charge Dynamics in Nanometer Ferromagnetic Heterostructures

Zhangshun Li et al.

Summary: Due to its high sensitivity and independence of magneto-optical response, terahertz emission spectroscopy has become a powerful tool for studying ultrafast demagnetization and spin current dynamics in nanometer-thick ferromagnetic/heavy metal heterostructures. By manipulating the order of conductive coatings and considering charge equilibration, we can determine the contributions of different dipole moments and directly observe the coupled spin and charge dynamics.

Cascaded Amplification and Manipulation of Terahertz Emission by Flexible Spintronic Heterostructures

Zuanming Jin et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates an efficient and practical approach to enhance and manipulate THz generation based on a cascaded Pt/CoFe/Ta trilayer fabricated on a flexible PET substrate. The cascaded design enables all THz emission from each PET/STE propagating almost in-phase and yields a 1.55 times amplification compared to a single PET/STE. Two proof-of-concept demonstrations highlight the potential of flexible PET/STE for building blocks of advanced functionalities.

Terahertz probe of nonequilibrium carrier dynamics and ultrafast photocurrents in the topological insulator Sb2Te3

Shunyi Ruan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the non-equilibrium carrier dynamics in a 3D topological insulator Sb2Te3 using time-resolved optical pump-THz probe spectroscopy. The results show ultrafast relaxation and release of carriers in the electron system through intra-band and inter-band scattering. Different ultrafast photocurrents are identified in Sb2Te3, with linear photogalvanic effect, circular photogalvanic effect, and thermoelectric effect driving the dynamics. The findings suggest the potential for all-optical modulation of THz emission without external bias fields, offering implications for high-speed THz optoelectronic and opto-spintronic devices based on topological insulators.

Giant topological longitudinal circular photo-galvanic effect in the chiral multifold semimetal CoSi

Zhuoliang Ni et al.

Summary: The absence of mirror symmetry, or chirality, leads to striking natural phenomena in systems such as DNA and crystalline solids. Chiral semimetals with topologically protected band degeneracies exhibit a circular photo-galvanic effect that can be quantized under specific conditions. These conditions are non-universal and depend on material parameters and incident frequency. Terahertz emission spectroscopy on the chiral topological semimetal CoSi reveals a large longitudinal photocurrent, suggesting potential applications in mid-infrared detectors.

Terahertz Spin-to-Charge Conversion by Interfacial Skew Scattering in Metallic Bilayers

Oliver Gueckstock et al.

Summary: This study investigated ultrafast spin-to-charge-current conversion in F|N bilayers using terahertz emission spectroscopy. It found that varying the structure of the F/N interface can significantly impact the amplitude and polarity of the charge current, with a dominant interface contribution observed in materials with small spin Hall angle. The results suggest the potential of skew scattering for enhancing interfacial spin-to-charge conversion.

Rigorous signal reconstruction in terahertz emission spectroscopy

Wentao Zhang et al.

Summary: Terahertz emission spectroscopy is a powerful method for measuring ultrafast dynamics in materials, but practical implementation can be challenging and lead to significant errors. A rigorous signal reconstruction method is proposed in this study, with the linear line-of-sight geometry of the THz emission spectrometer identified as the optimal configuration. This method was successfully applied to ultrafast THz magnetometry experiments, showcasing its ability to recover dynamics accurately.

Summary: The study presents interface magnetization induced THz generation from metallic heterostructures of Heusler alloy CoFeMnSi (CFMS) and Pd thin films. THz generation is mainly attributed to magnetization-induced optical rectification (MOR) and inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) based on experimental measurements.
