Breaking the limitation of polarization multiplexing in optical metasurfaces with engineered noise

Bo Xiong et al.

Summary: By introducing engineered noise to the precise solution of Jones matrix elements, we have surpassed the fundamental limit of polarization multiplexing capacity of metasurfaces. Through experiments, we have achieved up to 11 independent holographic images using a single metasurface illuminated by visible light with different polarizations, which is the highest reported capacity for polarization multiplexing. With the combination of position multiplexing, the metasurface is capable of generating 36 distinct images, forming a holographic keyboard pattern. This discovery opens up new possibilities for high-capacity optical display, information encryption, and data storage.

Efficiency tunable broadband terahertz graphene metasurface for circular polarization anomalous reflection and plane focusing effect

Dongru Yang et al.

Summary: In this paper, a broadband reflective metasurface (MS) with patterned graphene is proposed and numerically investigated for wavefront manipulation in the terahertz (THz) region. The unit-cell of the proposed reflective MS consists of a dielectric substrate, a single layer oval-hollow-structure (OHS) graphene, and a metal ground-plane, enabling cross-polarization conversion of circularly polarized (CP) waves in reflection mode. By changing the orientation angle of the OHS graphene, full 2 pi phase shifts of the reflected orthogonal CP wave can be achieved over a broadband frequency range with different Fermi energy levels (EF). Furthermore, the efficiency of reflection CP conversion is highly dependent on EF variation. Particularly, the efficiency of anomalous reflection and focusing effect of the reflective MS can be dynamically adjusted by changing EF. It has great prospects in THz applications such as communication and imaging.

Switchable efficiency terahertz anomalous refraction and focusing based on graphene metasurface

Xuzheng Zhu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes and numerically investigates a graphene metasurface based on split-ring resonators (SRRs) structure, which can achieve highly efficient switchability of anomalous refraction and planar focusing effects. Numerical simulation results show that the proposed metasurface can realize polarization conversion with a transmission amplitude of about 0.4 and achieve a full 2 pi phase shift by changing the geometrical parameters of the SRRs structure. Furthermore, the efficiency of cross polarization transmission is highly dependent on the Fermi energy level of graphene. By designing a spatially phase profile and arrangement of unit-cell structure, anomalous refraction and planar focusing effect can be achieved, with the efficiencies switched by changing the Fermi energy level rather than the physical size.

Efficiency adjustable terahertz circular polarization anomalous refraction and planar focusing based on a bi-layered complementary Z-shaped graphene metasurface

Xuzheng Zhu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an efficiency adjustable metasurface composed of bi-layered complementary Z-shaped structure graphene, which can control the terahertz wavefront's circular polarization in transmission mode. The simulation results demonstrate that the metasurface structure can achieve efficient circular polarization conversion and a full range of phase shift by adjusting the rotation angle of the graphene. Additionally, the adjustable graphene metasurface can realize anomalous refraction and planar focusing effects, and the efficiencies can be adjusted by changing the graphene's Fermi energy level. This research highlights the wide application prospects of adjustable graphene metasurfaces in communication, imaging, and other terahertz wavefront manipulation devices.

Summary: This study proposes a scheme of through-wall wireless communication using purposely designed passive metalenses. The metalenses can efficiently focus incoming waves to the other side of the wall, significantly enhancing wireless signal strength. By demonstrating its application in the 5GHz Wi-Fi environment, the study shows that the metalenses can reconnect broken network channels due to weak signal strength and significantly increase data transmission rates. This research provides an effective solution for wireless communication in future eco-friendly buildings.

Metasurface optics for on-demand polarization transformations along the optical path

Summary: By using metasurfaces to independently shape the polarization state of a light beam at each point in space along its propagation direction, longitudinally variable polarization optical components are demonstrated; a new class of polarizers and wave plates based on metasurfaces can impart an arbitrarily chosen polarization response along the propagation direction, regardless of the incident polarization; this approach allows for the desired propagation-dependent polarization response to be enacted without prior knowledge of the incident polarization, expanding the use of polarization in the design of multifunctional metasurfaces.
