Generation of higher-order Laguerre-Gaussian modes from a diode-pumped Pr3+:LiYF4 laser with an intra-cavity spherical aberration

A. Srinivasa Rao et al.

Summary: We demonstrate the direct generation of higher-order Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) petal modes for the first time using a compact diode-pumped Pr3+:LiYF4 (YLF) laser with an intra-cavity lens configuration. These modes are formed by the coherent superposition of positive and negative LG modes with a topological charge of +/- t. The selective operation of desired higher-order LG modes is achieved by the on-axis displacement of the intra-cavity lens with spherical aberration at 640 nm and 607 nm. These visible higher-order LG modes have potential applications in optical manipulation, quantum/optical underwater telecommunication, and microfabrication.

Unidirectional ring vortex laser using a wedge-plate shearing interferometer

Abdul-haseeb Munj et al.

Summary: In this work, a compact unidirectional Nd:YVO4 ring laser with an intracavity wedge-plate shearing interferometer (WPSI) as an output coupler was used to directly generate a high power and high purity LG01 optical vortex (OV). Compared to other designs, the monolithic WPSI offers advantages in stability and simplicity. The system is compact, cheap, and can be easily adapted to generate OV at wavelengths currently unobtainable using other methods.

Wavelength-Tunable and OAM-Switchable Ultrafast Fiber Laser Enabled by Intracavity Polarization Control

Haifeng Hu et al.

Summary: In this article, a wavelength-tunable and OAM-switchable ultrafast fiber laser is demonstrated, which can emit vortex beam outputs with a topological charge of l = +1 or l = -1 and the center wavelength can be continuously tuned. The obtained output pulse has a high pulse energy and a compressed pulse duration. This laser can emit OAM-switchable output with a shorter pulse duration and a broad wavelength tuning range, providing potential for more sophisticated and customizable laser outputs by adding polarization control elements.

Direct generation of 5 W all-fiber red laser at 635 nm

Cheng Zhang et al.

Summary: We propose and experimentally demonstrate a compact high-power all-fiber Pr3+-doped red laser at 635 nm using highly-resistant dielectric-coated fiber mirror. The red all-fiber laser directly generates a highest average power of 5 W at 635 nm which is more than twofold higher than previously reported, and the slope efficiency is as high as 25.7%. Different from the traditional visible laser by frequency doubling, this work offers a promising way for minia-turized, high-power fiber lasers in visible wavelength region.

Laser-induced forward-transfer with light possessing orbital angular momentum

Takashige Omatsu et al.

Summary: Helical light fields carrying orbital and spin angular momentum have the unique ability to twist materials and form exotic structures by interacting with them. This light-matter interaction has the potential to revolutionize industrial processes, including non-contact printing, and enable the production of advanced photonics, electronics, and spintronics devices. This review focuses on the printing technique called optical vortex laser induced forward transfer and discusses the interactions between light's angular momentum and materials, as well as the fabrication of novel devices using this technique.

Sampling a vortex from a Gaussian beam using a wedge-plate shearing interferometer

William R. Kerridge-Johns et al.

Summary: Various techniques have been developed for vortex beam generation, with the wedge-plate shearing interferometer (WPSI) being presented as a simple and efficient method. The WPSI can reflect a high-purity Laguerre-Gaussian vortex beam from an input fundamental Gaussian beam, with potential for low-cost vortex generation in metrology or education applications. The device is simple, compact, highly stable, and operates at any wavelength transparent to the material.
