Propagable Optical Vortices with Natural Noninteger Orbital Angular Momentum in Free Space

Xiaoyu Weng et al.

Summary: Light beams carrying noninteger orbital angular momentum, contrary to the scientific consensus, can propagate in free space. These vortex beams, with unique solutions to the Helmholtz equation, possess topological charges of l + 0.5, where l is an integer. The amplitudes and vortex phases with noninteger topological charges can remain stable during propagation in free space. This study's findings offer an alternative state of optical vortices in physics, with potential implications for innovations in optics and related scientific fields.

Multiple quasi-perfect vector vortex beams with arbitrary 3D position on focus

Martin Vergara et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a method for creating multiple independent quasi-perfect vector vortex beams in real time using a phase-only liquid-crystal-on-silicon display. The researchers were able to generate up to seven independent beams with different topological charges, achieving good agreement between simulated and measured phases and polarization structures. In addition, the same scheme was used to enhance the depth of focus of a single beam, resulting in a tube beam that maintains its properties during propagation.

Conservation of the half-integer topological charge on propagation of a superposition of two Bessel-Gaussian beams

V. V. Kotlyar et al.

Summary: By varying the amplitude of a constituent beam in the superposition of two Bessel-Gaussian beams, the topological charge of the entire superposition can be controlled. A degenerate intensity null exists at the center of the superposition, with optical vortices present in the periphery. When the amplitudes of the constituent beams tend to be equal, peripheral vortices move to infinity. The conservation of the half-integer topological charge of an optical vortex on propagation is demonstrated in this study.
