Ultimate limits of exoplanet spectroscopy: A quantum approach

Zixin Huang et al.

Summary: One of the challenges in exoplanet science is to determine the composition of their atmosphere and find signs of biochemical processes. This study establishes the quantum limit for detecting spectral absorption lines from dim exoplanets in the presence of bright stellar sources. By using structured measurements based on spatial demultiplexing, the researchers were able to separate the light from the planet and achieve the ultimate quantum limits.

Identifying Objects at the Quantum Limit for Superresolution Imaging

Michael R. Grace et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the discrimination of known candidate objects in passive imaging tasks and analyzes the quantum-limited error bounds for hypothesis tests on a library of incoherent, quasimonochromatic objects dominated by optical diffraction. The study shows that object-independent linear-optical spatial processing achieves the ultimate error rates, surpassing spatially resolved direct imaging as the diffraction becomes more severe. The results are applied to imaging scenarios and identify conditions for physically realizing superresolution object discrimination.

Optical quantum super-resolution imaging and hypothesis testing

Ugo Zanforlin et al.

Summary: Estimating the angular separation between two incoherent sources below the diffraction limit is challenging. This study demonstrates the use of hypothesis testing and quantum metrology techniques to super-resolve sources of different brightness with a simple optical interferometer.

Superresolution Linear Optical Imaging in the Far Field

A. A. Pushkina et al.

Summary: The resolution of optical imaging devices is limited by the diffraction of light. Superresolution microscopy techniques exploit optical nonlinearities, nonclassical properties of the illumination beam, or near field probing for active interaction with the object. A new technique based on passive analysis of light from the object using spatial modes has been demonstrated for 2D imaging with twofold resolution enhancement.

First stellar photons or an integrated optics discrete beam combiner at the William Herschel Telescope

Abani Shankar Nayak et al.

Summary: The study presented the first on-sky results of a four-telescope integrated optics discrete beam combiner tested at an astronomical telescope. By measuring visibility amplitudes and closure phases, it was found that the on-sky results showed significant dispersion from the expected values, mainly caused by the limited signal-to-noise ratio of the observations. This study marks a first step towards improving the validation of the DBC as a possible beam combination scheme for long-baseline interferometry.

Quantum Hypothesis Testing for Exoplanet Detection

Zixin Huang et al.

Summary: Using quantum state discrimination and quantum imaging techniques, one can significantly reduce the error probability of detecting weak secondary sources near a bright primary source, especially when they are closely separated. When the intensity of the weak source is much lower than the bright source, the error exponent can be improved by a factor of 1/epsilon. Linear-optical measurements optimized for this scenario can enhance the detection process in optical imaging applications, ranging from astronomy to microscopy.

Optimal Observables and Estimators for Practical Superresolution Imaging

Giacomo Sorelli et al.

Summary: The study proposes a method for constructing estimators that saturate the Cramer-Rao bound in practical situations for the distance between two thermal point sources. This includes addressing practical imperfections such as misalignment, cross talk, and detector noise.
