Unzheng Fan et al.

Summary: In this paper, a DAS system based on multispan relay amplification is proposed, which utilizes a bidirectional EDFA as a relay module to amplify both the probe light and the backscattering light. The theoretical analysis and numerical simulation show that the system can detect signals over 2500 km.

Quantitative measurement of disturbances based on optical-fibre multiparameter optimization method

Tianjiao Ma et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a quantitative method to measure disturbances using amplitude-based phi-OTDR and develops the FMPO method, which calculates strain by analyzing the curve pattern of optical intensity signals. Experimental results show a strong linear correlation between quantification indices and vibration amplitude, and successful identification of different intrusion intensities.

Distributed vibration sensor with a lasing phase-sensitive OTDR

Marlon M. Correia et al.

Summary: The authors experimentally demonstrate the operation of a lasing phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometer (Phi-OTDR) based on random feedback from a sensing fiber. In contrast to the conventional OTDR that measures small backscattered signals, the full output of the laser is used as the sensing signal in this system. The laser operates as a distributed vibration sensor with a high signal-to-noise ratio of 23 dB and a spatial resolution of 1.37 m in this proof-of-principle demonstration.

On the Detection Capabilities of Underwater Distributed Acoustic Sensing

Itzhak Lior et al.

Summary: The novel technique of distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) has great potential for underwater seismology by transforming standard telecommunication cables into dense arrays of seismo-acoustic sensors. Recording transient ground deformations by analyzing ambient noise, earthquakes, and phase velocities on DAS records is crucial for seismic monitoring. The apparent velocities play a significant role in detecting seismic deformations and phases, with DAS capabilities found to be similar to nearby broadband sensors underwater.

Phase-Sensitive Optical Time Domain Reflectometry With Rayleigh Enhanced Optical Fiber

Nageswara Lalam et al.

Summary: This paper presents a phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (8-OTDR) based on Rayleigh enhanced optical fiber to enhance the system signal-to-noise ratio. Experimental results show a 14 dB improvement in the measured SNRs of peaks at the end of the specialty sensing fiber. A wide range of vibration frequencies from 50 Hz to 15 kHz have been experimentally demonstrated, overcoming the limitations of conventional 8-OTDR systems and significantly enhancing vibration sensing performance.
