Molecular design and synthesis of acetohydrazonoyl cyanide structures as efficient dye-sensitized solar cells with enhancement of the performance of the standard N-719 dye upon co-sensitization

Mohamed R. Elmorsy et al.

Summary: Four novel acetohydrazonoyl cyanide compounds (5-8) with a triphenylamine moiety as an electron donor for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) were designed and synthesized. The compounds were well characterized and their properties were extensively investigated and compared to N-719 dye. The highest photovoltaic conversion efficiency was achieved by compound 8 (PCE, eta = 5.17%) due to its high photocurrent and photovoltage. It was used as a co-sensitizer along with N-719 to improve the performance of the cell.

Significant improvement of dye-sensitized solar cell performance using low-band-gap chromophores based on triphenylamine and carbazole as donors

Mohamed R. Elmorsy et al.

Summary: A series of new metal-free D-D-pi-A dyes (TMS-1-4) based on triphenylamine (TPA) and carbazole (Cz) have been designed and used in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) as strong donor species. These dyes exhibit strong absorption ability, which shows promise in improving the performance of DSSCs.

New photosensitizers that are based on carbazoles and have thiophene bridges with a low bandgap do 32% better than N719 metal complex dye

Mohamed R. Elmorsy et al.

Summary: The synthesis of metal-free organic sensitizers is crucial for obtaining low-cost, high-efficiency dye-sensitized solar cells. In this study, the photovoltaic analysis of four carbazole organic sensitizers with a D-A architecture was conducted, showing that these sensitizers can achieve broader light-harvesting ability and higher photovoltaic efficiency.

Synthesis of innovative triphenylamine-functionalized organic photosensitizers outperformed the benchmark dye N719 for high-efficiency dye-sensitized solar cells

Safa A. Badawy et al.

Summary: This study investigates the photovoltaic performance of four triphenylamine organic sensitizers and compares them to the conventional ruthenium-based sensitizer N719. The results show that SFA-7, a sensitizer used in dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) applications, exhibits higher photovoltaic efficiency and total conversion efficiency compared to N719, mainly due to higher short-circuit photocurrents and larger open-circuit voltages, as well as enhanced ability to fill the gaps on the surface of the TiO2 semiconductor.

Summary: Through extending the molecular conjugation strategy, two organic dyes, A6 and A10, were designed and synthesized for dye-sensitized solar cells. The dyes A10 and A6 showed improved capabilities in light-harvesting and photocurrent densities compared to the previously reported dye AZ6. The A10-based DSSC achieved enhanced efficiency and high photocurrent density, while the A6-based DSSC exhibited outstanding stability.
