Visible light activated MoS2/ZnO composites for photocatalytic degradation of ciprofloxacin antibiotic and hydrogen production

Y. M. Hunge et al.

Summary: In the process of photocatalysis, photon energy is converted into chemical energy using light and catalyst. This process has various applications such as degradation of hazardous compounds, nitrogen fixation, hydrogen production, air purification, water splitting, and carbon dioxide reduction. The study focuses on the synthesis of ZnO and MoS2/ZnO composites and their applications in photocatalytic degradation of ciprofloxacin antibiotic and hydrogen production. The MoS2/ZnO composites show superior photocatalytic activity compared to ZnO, attributed to extended light absorption capacity, effective charge transfer, suitable band alignment, and minimum recombination of charge carriers.

Efficient visible light photocatalytic degradation of heavy metal pollutant using carbon doped WS2 nanostructure

Athibala Mariappan et al.

Summary: It is important to develop a novel photocatalyst material that can degrade heavy metal and organic pollutants under visible-light regions. In this study, a carbon-doped WS2 photocatalyst was successfully synthesized using a facile hydrothermal method. The C-WS2 exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity, with a degradation efficiency of 96.3% and a degradation rate of 0.055 min-1 for the heavy metal pollutant Cr(VI) under visible light illumination. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of C-WS2 was attributed to efficient photogenerated electron-hole separation, with the major role in the degradation of Cr(VI) played by O2- and .OH active species. This work highlights the significance of the C-WS2 photocatalyst in degrading heavy metals under visible light and provides a pathway for developing new design photocatalysts for wastewater treatment.
