Numerical analysis of marine propellers low frequency noise during maneuvering. Part II: Passive and active noise control strategies

Giulio Dubbioso et al.

Summary: Maneuvering motion has a significant impact on the acoustic signature of marine propellers. In this study, a comprehensive tool for design and mission planning is developed based on previous analysis. Passive and active noise control strategies are considered, and the noise sources are calculated using a non-interacting RANS-BEMT procedure and analyzed with an acoustic analogy. The test case involves a modern twin screw ship undergoing rectilinear advance and turning maneuvers.

Numerical analysis of marine propellers low frequency noise during maneuvering

Giulio Dubbioso et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effects of maneuvering motion on the hydro-acoustic performance of a marine propeller in a behind-hull configuration. The study reveals that velocities induced by ship motions significantly modify the inflow to the propeller, impacting noise sources and emissions. The multidisciplinary approach used in this study highlights the importance of considering maneuvering motions in the design process to improve stealth capabilities and preserve marine life.

Numerical prediction of scale effect on propeller bearing force of a four-screw ship

Shuai Sun et al.

Summary: The scale effect on propeller unsteady bearing force of a four-screw ship was studied using numerical simulation with the RANS method. The larger wake field difference between inside and outside propeller disk exacerbates the unbalanced load distribution for the full-scale ship. The results show that the fluctuation values of the full-scale ship are smaller than those of the model one, and the scale effect of the outside propeller is stronger than the inside one.
