Interfacial mechanical properties of tetrahydrofuran hydrate-solid surfaces: Implications for hydrate management

Yanwen Lin et al.

Summary: Understanding the interfacial mechanical properties between hydrate and solids is crucial for designing surfaces for hydrate management. This study examined the effects of surface wettability, solid substrate type, and temperature on the adhesion properties between THF hydrate and ice. The results showed that the adhesion strength of THF hydrate and ice varied with the composition of the coating, and the adhesion strength of ice was greater than that of THF hydrate for all investigated solid substrates. Additionally, the adhesion of THF hydrate on inorganic glass surfaces was found to be enhanced as a function of the receding contact angle. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed that the adhesion strength of ice on solid substrates was primarily influenced by the quasi-liquid water layer, while the adhesion of hydrate was also affected by newly formed unconventional clathrate cages. This study provides valuable insights for developing coatings to manage hydrates.

Integrating test device and method for creep failure and ultrasonic response of methane hydrate-bearing sediments

Qiaobo Hu et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel device is proposed to test the time-dependent deformation and ultrasonic response of hydrate-bearing sediment (HBS) under high-pressure and low-temperature conditions. The device allows control of four pressures and analysis of stress-strain relationships and ultrasonic data to determine the macroscopical failure and microcosmical creep deformation law of the samples. Preliminary experiments have verified the applicability of the device. This method is significant for field observation of reservoir failure during hydrate exploitation using geophysical techniques.

3D DEM modeling on mechanical weakening of gas hydrate-bearing sandy sediments during hydrate dissociation

Xiaofeng Dou et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel approach based on the discrete element method (DEM) to describe the mechanical weakening of cementing-type gas hydrate-bearing sandy sediments (GHBSSs) during hydrate dissociation. The DEM model successfully captures the mechanical weakening behaviors of GHBSSs, and a fitting equation is obtained to describe the relationship among peak strength, initial hydrate saturation, and hydrate dissociation ratio. This study is valuable for evaluating the stability of GHBSSs during hydrate production.

Interfacial strength between ice and sediment: A solution towards fracture-filling hydrate system

Yanlong Li et al.

Summary: This paper develops a novel apparatus to detect the interfacial strength between hydrate individuals and their host sediment in fracture-filling NGH systems. By taking ice as a substitute, shear strengths of three typical substances in fracture-filling NGH systems are examined and compared comprehensively. The results show significant differences in the load-displacement curves and shear surface characteristics between the ice-sediment interface and the pure ice and ice-bearing sediment interfaces. The strength of the ice-sediment interface is also found to be sensitive to shear rate and decreases with increasing shear rate.

Summary: This review comprehensively summarizes recent mechanical studies on hydrate-bearing sediment (HBS), clarifies the influences of several important parameters on the mechanical behavior of HBS, discusses corresponding particle-level mechanisms, and investigates the influences of hydrate exploitation techniques on the strength and deformation behavior of HBS. The proposed relationships and mechanisms provide insightful guidance for understanding the mechanical behavior of HBS and developing models for predicting the structural evolution of HBS during NGH exploration and exploitation.

Summary: The study showed that the heterogeneity of hydrate distribution significantly affects the mechanical parameters of hydrate-bearing sediments, including elastic modulus, shear strength, and dilation. Anisotropy of the hydrate heterogeneous distribution effect was also observed. Considering the impact of hydrate distribution heterogeneity is essential when characterizing the mechanical properties of GHBS.

Mesh sensitivity in numerical models of strain-weakening systems

Elena Zabolotnii et al.

Summary: This paper presents a framework for evaluating mesh sensitivity in numerical models, demonstrated through a case study of failure at the Mount Polley TSF in Canada. The study shows that the failure was caused by strain localization in a shear band, and provides predictions for stability levels under different scenarios. The relationship between a model's discretization, the shape of the strain-weakening curve, and convergence is also discussed.

Production-induced instability of a gentle submarine slope: Potential impact of gas hydrate exploitation with the huff-puff method

Lin Tan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the geomechanical stability of gently sloping reservoir of oceanic hydrates induced by gas production using the huff-puff method. The production-induced slope failure is likely to occur due to overpressure caused by thermal stimulation during the huff stage and strength reduction from hydrate dissociation. Proper modeling of geological structures is crucial in reservoir simulations to impact production effectiveness and geomechanical response of the reservoir.

Prospect of marine natural gas hydrate stimulation theory and technology system

Wu Nengyou et al.

Summary: The key to realizing the commercial production of natural gas hydrate (NGH) is to significantly increase the NGH productivity, whether by enlarging the drainage area, improving dissociation efficiency, or enhancing seepage conditions. The use of complex-structure wells, multiple-well patterns, novel production methods, and reservoir stimulation technologies can greatly increase NGH productivity. However, there are technical bottlenecks in fundamental research on NGH production that need to be addressed, such as sample preparation, simulated reservoir monitoring, and mechanical coupling technologies. The combined application of complex-structure wells, well-pattern production models, novel production methods, and reservoir stimulation technologies are key to increasing NGH productivity in a significant scale.
