Waves of Change: Towards Ecosystem-Based Management to Climate Change Adaptation

Luciana Yokoyama Xavier et al.

Summary: Coastal climate change impacts pose challenges for policy and decision makers to implement effective adaptation measures. The ecosystem-based management approach can offer a more holistic and sustainable approach to adaptation. However, it is important to consider whether and how countries incorporate ecosystem-based management into their climate change adaptation strategies. As one of the largest coastal countries, Brazil has the potential to lead in implementing ecosystem-based management principles in coastal zones. This article evaluates and discusses Brazil's progress in promoting climate change adaptations based on ecosystem-based management principles by analyzing two national adaptation institutions. The findings show that while Brazil has integrated many ecosystem-based management principles into national climate change adaptation efforts, there is a need to focus on operationalizing principles related to acknowledging uncertainties, sustainability, democracy, and knowledge production and application.

Not just sand: The folly of dismantling the environmental protection of dunes in Brazil

Marcelo Oliveira Soares et al.

Summary: The Brazilian federal government has disregarded existing legislation in the past three years, claiming that it hampers national development, and has repealed national resolution CONAMA 303/2002. This action has left mobile and eolian dunes without legal protection, allowing for activities such as real estate, industry, and urban development. The occupation of these dunes threatens the water security of Northeast Brazil, the sedimentary balance, and tourism activities. The article highlights the need for their conservation and a permanent decision from the Supreme Court to keep the CONAMA 303 resolution active.

Achieving the Paris Agreement would substantially reduce climate change risks to biodiversity in Central and South America

Stella Manes et al.

Summary: Climate change poses a significant threat to biodiversity, with tropical biodiversity expected to be most impacted. This study evaluates the risk projections for different aspects of biodiversity in Central and South America (CSA) and the potential benefits of climate change mitigation. The findings suggest that up to 85% of risk projections predict negative impacts, with species extinctions projected in 26% of cases. However, mitigation efforts in line with the Paris Agreement could substantially reduce risks by over 80%, emphasizing the importance of adaptation measures for endemic species in CSA.

Assessing the coastal protection services of natural mangrove forests and artificial rock revetments

E. M. A. Strain et al.

Summary: The study compared the coastal protection services of mangroves and rock revetments, with rock revetments found to attenuate waves more effectively at several locations. Despite the important coastal protection benefits provided by mangroves, the high upfront costs of building rock revetments were noted. Therefore, nature-based coastal protection solutions should be implemented in locations where they are eco-engineering and socio-economically acceptable options for climate change adaptation.

The protective role of mangroves in safeguarding coastal populations through hazard risk reduction: A case study in northeast Brazil

Nadia Selene Zamboni et al.

Summary: This study examines the role of mangroves as coastal protective barriers in the face of sea-level rise. The results show that a significant portion of the shoreline is experiencing erosion, and further loss is expected by 2030. The study also emphasizes the economic losses and costs associated with shoreline changes and mangrove loss. Conservation policies and restoration efforts are necessary to safeguard the ecosystem-service co-benefits provided by mangrove forests.

Unprecedented threats to cities from multi-century sea level rise

Benjamin H. Strauss et al.

Summary: Human-caused carbon dioxide emissions will have long-lasting impacts on global temperatures and sea levels. Many major cities, particularly in Asia, will face unprecedented exposure levels from sea level rise. Countries like China, India, Indonesia, and Vietnam have large populations residing in areas vulnerable to high tide lines, while small island nations are at risk of near-total loss. Meeting the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement could significantly reduce the exposure and protect coastal megacities from extensive defense requirements.

The COVID-19 pandemic as an opportunity to weaken environmental protection in Brazil

Mariana M. Vale et al.

Summary: This paper examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on environmental protection and legislation in Brazil, revealing that the current administration has used the pandemic to weaken environmental protection, resulting in a reduction in environmental fines and an increase in Amazonian deforestation. This could have significant negative effects on biodiversity, greenhouse gas emissions, and indigenous peoples. The scientific community, media, and civil society at national and international levels are crucial in reversing these harmful actions.

The global value of coastal wetlands for storm protection

Robert Costanza et al.

Summary: Coastal wetlands provide valuable ecosystem services, including protecting coastal communities from storms. This study estimated the global value of storm protection services provided by coastal wetlands for the first time, showing the importance of investing in conservation and restoration of these wetlands. With the increase in frequency and intensity of tropical cyclones due to climate change, the benefits of protecting and restoring coastal wetlands will become increasingly important and valuable in the future.

Summary: Brazil's federal environmental laws have been improved in the past 50 years, but the recent dismantling of the legal environmental framework by the Bolsonaro administration has led to increased pressure on biodiversity and ecosystems. The environmental impacts related to the dismantling of environmental policies in Brazil include increased deforestation in the Amazon, release of pesticides, and lack of action to minimize the effects of oil spills.
