Proanthocyanidins in grape seeds and their role in gut microbiota-white adipose tissue axis

Yasmin Alaby Martins Ferreira et al.

Summary: Several factors can impact the gut microbiota, affecting host metabolism and immunity. Grape seed proanthocyanidins extract (GSPE) has potential effects on the gut microbiota-white adipose tissue axis against obesity by improving intestinal permeability and microbial diversity, decreasing LPS levels, and modulating the TLR-4 pathway.

Preventive Effects of Anthocyanins from Lycium ruthenicum Murray in High-Fat Diet-Induced Obese Mice Are Related to the Regulation of Intestinal Microbiota and Inhibition of Pancreatic Lipase Activity

Na Li et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that anthocyanins from Lycium ruthenicum fruits have preventive effects in high-fat-diet induced obese mice. Anthocyanins regulate the diversity of gut microbiota, decrease the ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroidota, increase the abundance of Akkermansia, and reduce the abundance of Faecalibaculum to prevent obesity.

Adipose tissue inflammation and metabolic dysfunction in obesity

Tatsuo Kawai et al.

Summary: Chronic low-grade inflammation of adipose tissue is linked to metabolic disease and organ complications, mainly caused by the secretion of inflammatory substances by adipocytes and infiltration of immune cells. Despite being low-grade, this inflammation negatively impacts remote organ function and is considered a causative factor of obesity-related complications.

Fructo-Oligosaccharides and Pectins Enhance Beneficial Effects of Raspberry Polyphenols in Rats with Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver

Bartosz Fotschki et al.

Summary: The study found that the combination of raspberry polyphenolic extract (RE) with fructo-oligosaccharides (FOSs) or pectins (PECs) reduced the production of short-chain fatty acids in the caecum and had favorable effects on liver lipid metabolism by decreasing liver fat, cholesterol, and triglyceride content, as well as hepatic steatosis. RE and FOSs also reduced inflammatory cell infiltration and IL-6 plasma levels. The most effective dietary treatment in regulating liver lipid metabolism and inflammation induced by an obesogenic diet was found to be the combination of RE with FOSs.

The effect of lipid metabolism regulator anthocyanins from Aronia melanocarpa on 3T3-L1 preadipocytes and C57BL/6 mice via activating AMPK signaling and gut microbiota

Chunping Chen et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that anthocyanins from Aronia melanocarpa (AAM) regulate lipid metabolism by decreasing lipid content and inflammation, improving blood lipid levels, promoting beneficial gut microbial growth, and maintaining lipid metabolism. AAM achieves this through activating the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) signaling pathway and regulating adipogenic transcription factors and genes associated with fat metabolism. The findings suggest that AAM has potential therapeutic effects on hyperlipidemia.
