Efficacy and security of tumor vaccines for hepatocellular carcinoma: a systemic review and meta-analysis of the last 2 decades

Cheng-Long Han et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the efficacy and security of tumor vaccines for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The results showed that tumor vaccines, especially DC vaccine, are safe and worth exploring. DC vaccine had a higher objective response rate (ORR) and longer median overall survival (OS)/progression-free survival (PFS) compared to peptide vaccine. HBV-related HCC may benefit more from tumor vaccines. However, more high-quality prospective studies are needed to further validate the efficacy and safety of tumor vaccines.

The Association of Glycemic Index, Glycemic Load, and Daily Carbohydrates Intake with the Risk of Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Long-Shan Yang et al.

Summary: Glycemic index (GI), glycemic load (GL), and daily carbohydrates intake are associated with the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). A high glycemic load diet is linked to an increased risk of HCC in individuals with viral hepatitis, while no significant association is found in those without viral hepatitis. Therefore, a low glycemic load diet is recommended to reduce the risk of HCC in individuals with viral hepatitis.

Anthropometric indicators of adiposity and risk of primary liver cancer: A systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis

Lun-Jie Yan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between different anthropometric indicators and the risk of primary liver cancer. Adiposity was found to be strongly associated with an increased risk of liver cancer, with waist-to-hip ratio and waist-to-height ratio showing the strongest association.

Global, regional and national burden of primary liver cancer by subtype

Harriet Rumgay et al.

Summary: This study provides worldwide, regional, and national estimates of the incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA). The results show that HCC contributes the largest burden of liver cancer globally, with the highest rates in Eastern Asia, Northern Africa, and Southeastern Asia. iCCA rates are highest in Southeastern Asia, Eastern Asia, Northern Europe, the Caribbean and Central America, and Oceania.

Racial/ethnic disparities in hepatocellular carcinoma incidence and mortality rates in the United States, 1992-2018

Christian S. Alvarez et al.

Summary: This study examined the incidence and mortality rates of HCC in the USA between 1992 and 2018, finding that rates began to decline for most groups starting in 2015, although disparities continued to exist. The study highlighted that greater efforts are needed to reduce the burden of HCC among vulnerable groups such as non-Hispanic Black individuals and American Indians/Alaska Natives.

Efficacy and Safety of Aspirin for Prevention of Hepatocellular Carcinoma: An Updated Meta-analysis

Lun-Jie Yan et al.

Summary: This study confirmed through meta-analysis that the use of aspirin significantly reduces the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The preventive effect is especially pronounced in women and non-elderly individuals. Daily use of 100 mg aspirin offers the maximum reduction in HCC risk, but it does slightly increase the risk of bleeding.

Summary: Obesity and metabolic syndrome are increasing worldwide, being associated with various diseases including cancer. Time-restricted eating (TRE) is a sustainable intervention with potential benefits for obese and cancer patients, but further research is needed.

Hepatocellular carcinoma

Arndt Vogel et al.

Summary: Hepatocellular carcinoma is a common cancer worldwide, with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease becoming a dominant cause. Treatment options are varied, including surgery, radiation, and medication. With the approval of new drugs and the development of immunotherapy, the outlook for hepatocellular carcinoma patients has improved, but the optimal sequencing of drugs and predictive biomarkers still need further research.

Adiposity and mortality in Korean adults: a population-based prospective cohort study

Hannah Oh et al.

Summary: The study examined the relationships between BMI, waist circumference, predicted body fat mass, and mortality in a Korean population. The results showed a J-shaped association between BMI and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, with the lowest point at BMI = 25.0-29.9. It was also found that higher waist circumference and predicted body fat mass were positively associated with mortality, suggesting a need for re-evaluation of current overweight criteria for Asians.

Associations of six adiposity-related markers with incidence and mortality from 24 cancers-findings from the UK Biobank prospective cohort study

Solange Parra-Soto et al.

Summary: This study investigated the associations of six adiposity markers with incidence and mortality from 24 cancers, finding that regardless of the marker used, adiposity was associated with an increased risk in 10 cancer sites. The linear associations were observed for most cancer types, indicating a consistent relationship between adiposity and cancer risk.

Obesity and the risk of primary liver cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Won Sohn et al.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis found that increasing BMI is associated with higher occurrence and mortality from primary liver cancer. The risk of primary liver cancer occurrence rises as BMI increases, with higher BMI levels linked to greater risks. High BMI is an independent risk factor for both the occurrence of and mortality from primary liver cancer.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Sex/Gender Differences in Obesity Prevalence, Comorbidities, and Treatment

Ashley J. Cooper et al.

Summary: Obesity is a multifactorial condition influenced by complex interactions among sex/gender, sociocultural, environmental, and physiological factors. More research on sex/gender is needed to investigate mechanisms underlying sex/gender differences in prevalence, comorbidities, and treatment, as well as to identify ways to increase men's interest and participation in obesity treatment, and examine differences in obesity prevalence and treatments for transgender and gender non-conforming individuals.

Summary: This study found that thiazolidinediones may reduce the incidence of HCC in Asians with type 2 diabetes, while alpha-glucosidase inhibitors and sulfonylureas may slightly increase the risk of HCC. Future research should investigate whether these drugs should be avoided in patients with chronic liver disease.
