How does geriatric nursing education program change the knowledge, attitude and working intention among undergraduate nursing students? A systematic literature review

Summary: This review aimed to examine the changes in knowledge, attitude, and working intention in nursing students after receiving undergraduate geriatric nursing education. The study found that type 2 education program demonstrated the best educational outcomes among undergraduate students. Future research should focus on evaluating the content of each type of geriatric education program to inform the development of undergraduate geriatric nursing education.

Interventions to improve attitudes toward older people in undergraduate health and social sciences students. A systematic review and meta-analysis

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis found that empathy-based interventions were the most effective in improving attitudes towards older persons in undergraduate health and social sciences students. These interventions also increased knowledge about aging and older people. Improving attitudes among future professionals could enhance the management and quality of care for older individuals.

Determining nursing students' attitudes and empathic tendencies regarding aged discrimination

Summary: The study aimed to determine nursing students' attitudes towards aged discrimination and empathic tendencies. The findings showed that students had a moderate level of ageism attitude. Higher levels of empathy were associated with a decrease in both positive and negative ageism, and an increase in attitudes towards restricting the lives of older people. Significant differences were found between living with the elderly and empathy, as well as gender and attitudes towards the elderly.

Ageism and the Factors Affecting Ageism among Korean Nursing Students: A Cross-Sectional Study

Summary: The study found that nursing students exhibit a certain level of ageism, primarily influenced by factors such as aging anxiety, frequency of contact, preference for gerontological nursing, age, and quality of contact. Therefore, tailored gerontological education programs or community link initiatives for nursing students are necessary to increase positive experiences with older adults and reduce anxiety about aging.

Assessing knowledge and ageist attitudes and behaviors toward older adults among undergraduate nursing students

Summary: The study found that the majority of undergraduate nursing students in Jordan have poor knowledge of aging, as well as ageist attitudes and behaviors. Additionally, there was a significant difference in the level of knowledge about aging between senior and junior nursing students. Furthermore, significant correlations were found between students' knowledge of aging and their ageist attitudes and behaviors. Targeting knowledge deficit and ageist attitudes and behaviors among nursing students is crucial for optimal geriatric care.
