Substrate recognition and cryo-EM structure of the ribosome-bound TAC toxin of Mycobacterium tuberculosis

Moise Mansour et al.

Summary: This study reveals the mechanism of action of the toxin in the Mycobacterium tuberculosis TAC system. The researchers discovered that the TAC toxin is a genuine ribonuclease and identified the cleavage sites on mRNA targets on a transcriptome-wide scale. Additionally, they determined the specific mechanism by which the TAC toxin interacts with the ribosome and tRNA through cryo-electron microscopy.

The diversity of Shine-Dalgarno sequences sheds light on the evolution of translation initiation

Jin-Der Wen et al.

Summary: The diversity of SD sequences is widespread in prokaryotes, while aSD sequences remain relatively stable. Research has shown that SD:aSD base pairing is beneficial but nonessential to translation initiation, and that the untranslated region of mRNA and ribosomes have evolved distinct ways of translation initiation in different species.

Structures of tmRNA and SmpB as they transit through the ribosome

Charlotte Guyomar et al.

Summary: Trans-translation, mediated by SmpB and tmRNA, enables recycling of ribosomes stalled on defective mRNAs in bacteria. Structures of the ribosome during trans-translation reveal a translocation intermediate and elucidate the movements of the tmRNA-SmpB complex in the ribosome.
