Summary: Understanding the hydrodynamics of three-phase stirred tanks is crucial for analyzing turbulence, stability, and performance. While positron emission particle tracking (PEPT) is effective in measuring the hydrodynamics of particles in opaque, high solid content systems, its application in characterizing the liquid phase is limited. This study presents a new tracer, designed to emulate the density of the liquid phase, for high-speed tracking with PEPT. Comparative experiments in a flotation cell showed significant differences in pathlines, residence time, and velocity distribution among the tracers, with the hydrodynamics of the new tracer aligning with existing CFD predictions for the liquid phase. This methodology allows for a comprehensive study of relative flow behavior in complex multiphase systems.
