Study on divertor detachment and pedestal characteristics in the DIII-D upper closed divertor

H. Q. Wang et al.

Summary: Experiments in DIII-D demonstrate that higher plasma current and heating power combined with impurity seeding facilitate divertor detachment and improve plasma performance in a closed divertor compared to an open divertor.

The role of ETG modes in JET-ILW pedestals with varying levels of power and fuelling

B. Chapman-Oplopoiou et al.

Summary: In this study, the results of GENE gyrokinetic calculations are presented for a series of JET-ITER-like-wall (ILW) type I ELMy H-mode discharges with different power and gas fuelling levels. The simulations show that turbulence due to electron-temperature-gradient (ETGs) modes plays a significant role in heat flux generation. By varying the normalized temperature and density gradients, it is found that the ratio of these two quantities determines the location of the peak in the ETG growth rate and heat flux spectra. The study also reveals that ETGs limit the temperature gradient in the discharges.

Pedestal structure, stability and scalings in JET-ILW: the EUROfusion JET-ILW pedestal database

L. Frassinetti et al.

Summary: This paper describes the EUROfusion JET-ILW pedestal database, focusing on technical aspects, pedestal structure and stability, and the revision of scaling law. It is found that at high gas and high power, the JET-ILW pedestal tends to be far from the PB boundary, and the relative shift plays a key role in the pedestal pressure.

Role of the separatrix density in the pedestal performance in deuterium low triangularity JET-ILW plasmas and comparison with JET-C

L. Frassinetti et al.

Summary: The reduction of pedestal pressure with increasing separatrix density over pedestal density has been observed in JET, and is attributed to two distinct mechanisms. The increase in n(e)(sep)/ n(e)(ped) up to 0.4 shifts the pedestal pressure radially outwards, while above 0.4, it is ascribed to increased turbulent transport and likely resistive MHD effects.

Testing predictions of electron scale turbulent pedestal transport in two DIII-D ELMy H-modes

W. Guttenfelder et al.

Summary: This paper presents linear and nonlinear gyrokinetic analyses in the pedestal region of two DIII-D ELMy H-mode discharges, showing the impact of divertor configurations on pedestal profiles. The study finds that electron temperature gradients are correlated with ETG instability thresholds, leading to significant contributions to electron heat fluxes.

Pedestal magnetic turbulence measurements in ELMy H-mode DIII-D plasmas by Faraday-effect polarimetry

J. Chen et al.

Summary: Internal magnetic fluctuation measurements are used to identify turbulence associated with micro-tearing modes (MTM) in the DIII-D Edge-Localized-Mode (ELM)-y H-mode pedestal. These measurements provide unique constraints for developing physics understanding and validating models of the H-mode pedestal for future devices.

Role of microtearing mode in DIII-D and future high- β p core plasmas

X. Jian et al.

Summary: Excellent confinement in high beta p discharges in DIII-D is characterized by a strong ITB in both ion and electron thermal transport channels, with new gyrokinetic analysis revealing the regulatory role of MTM on electron temperature profile in the ITB region. Extrapolations to future scenarios suggest a potential return of dominant instability to ES-DW, but some unique features associated with MTMs predicted for DIII-D parameters may persist in the reactor ES-DW.

Gyrokinetic benchmark of the electron temperature-gradient instability in the pedestal region

Ehab Hassan et al.

Summary: Transport from turbulence driven by the electron temperature-gradient (ETG) instability is likely a major source of electron heat losses through the pedestal, with distinct characteristics in the pedestal compared to the core. Rigorous multi-code benchmarking exercise is imperative for confidently modeling ETG turbulence in the pedestal. The comparison of different geometric parameters and codes shows very good agreement in linear frequencies, growth rates, and eigenfunctions, laying the foundation for further research in this area.
