Post-restoration grassland management overrides the effects of restoration methods in propagule-rich landscapes

Csaba Tolgyesi et al.

Summary: Grassland restoration globally is seeing progress in addressing biodiversity loss and ecosystem service depletion. The choice of post-restoration management plays a crucial role in the long-term community reassembly, potentially having a comparable impact to the restoration method chosen. Selecting an optimal post-restoration management strategy is essential for ensuring successful restoration outcomes in grasslands.

Light competition drives herbivore and nutrient effects on plant diversity

Anu Eskelinen et al.

Summary: Enrichment of nutrients and loss of herbivores can lead to a loss of plant diversity in grassland ecosystems. This study shows that restoring light to understory plants can mitigate this loss caused by nutrient enrichment or absence of mammalian herbivores. Herbivory plays a significant role in controlling diversity through light competition. The findings suggest that maintaining grazing by herbivores could protect biodiversity in grassland ecosystems by alleviating competition for light.

Functional rather than structural connectivity explains grassland plant diversity patterns following landscape scale habitat loss

Adam Kimberley et al.

Summary: Increasing landscape connecting elements cannot compensate for large-scale grassland area loss, leading to significant declines in both structural and functional connectivity. Generalist species are negatively affected by connectivity, with structural connectivity having the strongest impact, while functional connectivity determines the presence of grassland specialist species in focal grasslands.

Ecological indicator and traits values for Swedish vascular plants

Torbjorn Tyler et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new dataset of species-specific ecological indicator values, physiological and reproductive traits, and indices of relevance for conservation for all vascular plant species of Sweden based on a broad survey of published and unpublished data. The potential uses and limitations of these values, traits and indices are briefly outlined and discussed in the study.
