Prediction of Intermittent Fluctuations from Surface Pressure Measurements on a Turbulent Airfoil

Samuel H. H. Rudy et al.

Summary: This work focuses on predicting extreme events in the flow around an airfoil at low Reynolds using machine-learning techniques. The study shows that data-driven models of low-order dynamic variables perform better in predicting these events compared to other methods. Furthermore, it is observed that low-dimensional initializations do not accurately predict observables with extreme events, which is different from previous findings.

Summary: This study investigates the fatigue damage in nonlinear aeroelastic systems under stochastic inflow conditions through numerical simulations and wind tunnel experiments. The results demonstrate that fatigue damage is significantly higher under stochastic flow conditions compared to deterministic input flows.

Extreme events in a class of nonlinear Duffing-type oscillators with a parametric periodic force

Dan Zhao et al.

Summary: This paper investigates extreme events in a class of generalized nonlinear Duffing-type oscillators with a parametric periodic force. The occurrence mechanism, description methods, and risk of extreme events are discussed. The effects of amplitude and frequency are investigated to quantify extreme events. The obtained results provide theoretical guidance for the design and fabrication of micro-electromechanical components.

Flutter prediction of its occurrence, amplitude and nonlinear behaviour

Paul A. Meehan

Summary: This study investigates the occurrence, limit cycle amplitude, and chaotic behavior of flutter using a binary coupled modal model. Closed form analytical predictions are provided to understand the aeroelastic phenomenon. The model considers modal coupling through stiffness and damping terms, identifying two forms of flutter. Analytical criteria for flutter onset are developed, including a new necessary divergence criterion. The model is validated with classical airfoil results and enables the detection of viscous mode coupling flutter. The occurrence and conditions of both stiffness and viscous mode coupling flutter are numerically verified. Efficient analytical prediction for flutter amplitude is also demonstrated. Lastly, the occurrence of chaotic flutter is confirmed using a nonlinear investigation.

Quantifying the parameter dependent basin of the unsafe regime of asymmetric Levy-noise-induced critical transitions

Jinzhong Ma et al.

Summary: This study focused on predicting critical transitions from desirable to undesirable states in a tri-stable model induced by asymmetric Levy noise. The absorbed region and the parameter dependent basin of the unsafe regime (PDBUR) were introduced to help quantify potential ranges where these transitions may occur, providing theoretical guidance on taking measures to avoid noise-induced catastrophic transitions.

Investigating amplitude death in a coupled nonlinear aeroelastic system

Ashwad Raaj et al.

Summary: The study explores the possibility of using the concept of Amplitude Death (AD) to suppress oscillatory instabilities in aeroelastic systems, specifically focusing on flutter instability caused by nonlinear fluid-structure interactions. Coupling two airfoils together, the effects of coupling strength and time delay on the regime of AD are systematically varied to investigate their impact on flutter suppression. The findings demonstrate that AD can effectively suppress flutter instability and serve as a potential mechanism for flutter suppression in both deterministic and stochastic input flow scenarios.

Characterizing stochastic resonance in a triple cavity

Ruoxing Mei et al.

Summary: This study explores stochastic resonance in a triple cavity subjected to noise, periodic force, and vertical constant force, focusing on the spectral amplification. It compares this structure to other cavity designs and investigates the impact of various parameters on the maximum spectral amplification. The results show that the characteristics of stochastic resonance change with the increase of the periodic force amplitude, while the maximum of spectral amplification decreases with the increase of vertical force and periodic force frequency.

Fixed-interval smoothing of an aeroelastic airfoil model with cubic or free-play nonlinearity in incompressible flow

Qi Liu et al.

Summary: This study examines the problem of fixed-interval smoothing using a state-of-the-art technique, optimizing a single objective function to estimate system states, measurement noise, and unknown parameters simultaneously. The method proves effective for airfoil models with structural nonlinearity, demonstrating accuracy in state and parameter estimations even under complex measurement noise. This algorithm remains effective for high-dimensional nonlinear aeroelastic systems.

A resilience concept based on system functioning: A dynamical systems perspective

Sarah Schoenmakers et al.

Summary: The article introduces a new framework for resilience, shifting from a state-based to a system functioning-based approach. Emphasizing the importance of flexibility in maintaining system functioning, it provides a classification of system responses based on the properties of possible disturbances, including their timescales. The article discusses two mechanisms of resilience - tolerance and flexibility as properties of the system, and adaptation and transformation as processes that alter the system's tolerance and flexibility.
