An Earthquake Simulator for New Zealand

Bruce E. Shaw et al.

Summary: We present an earthquake simulator for New Zealand that uses the Rate-and-State Earthquake Simulator engine. The simulator includes all faults considered in the most recent New Zealand national seismic hazard maps and introduces new methods for handling the interaction between upper plate faults and a subduction interface fault. The results are evaluated through statistical testing and comparison with geological and geophysical observations, showing overall consistency with these measures. The study also discusses important emergent aspects of the synthetic catalog generated by the simulator.

A Kinematic Model of Quaternary Fault Slip Rates and Distributed Deformation at the New Zealand Plate Boundary

H. Hirschberg et al.

Summary: In this study, we present a kinematic model of Quaternary long-term deformation at the New Zealand plate boundary. The model provides improved estimates of fault slip rates and uncertainties, and predicts lower shortening rates along the Hikurangi subduction margin compared to previous estimates. It also predicts large strains adjacent to the Alpine Fault, indicating significant plate motion on faults with currently unknown slip rates. The study highlights the importance of considering interseismic locking and uncertainty in fault parameters for accurate seismic hazard assessment.

Summary: To better represent Quaternary-active faulting in the western United States, two databases were prepared as part of the U.S. National Seismic Hazard Model update. By expanding the inclusion criteria, a larger set of faults were assessed for use in the updated model. These databases serve as common input data for deformation modeling, earthquake rupture forecasting, and other uses in NSHM development.

Heterogeneity in Microseismicity and Stress Near Rupture-Limiting Section Boundaries Along the Late-Interseismic Alpine Fault

E. Warren-Smith et al.

Summary: Paleoseismic evidence suggests that key section boundaries conditionally inhibit rupture. Utilizing data from a seismometer network, this study examines the effects of material and structural heterogeneities on rupture behavior. The results highlight the importance of considering a range of factors when evaluating controls on rupture segmentation.

Spatiotemporal clustering of great earthquakes on a transform fault controlled by geometry

Jamie D. Howarth et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the rupture mode between major and great earthquakes is controlled by transform fault geometry, impacting the behavior of earthquakes. By analyzing the spatial and temporal patterns of earthquake terminations, the study uncovers along-strike patterns of rupture extent and two modes of earthquake behavior characterized by major and great earthquakes. Physics-based simulations of seismic cycles closely resemble the observations, suggesting that the switching between rupture modes is due to heterogeneous stress states evolving over multiple seismic cycles in response to geometric complexities.
