Herbicide resistant weeds in New Zealand: state of knowledge

Hossein Ghanizadeh et al.

Summary: Herbicide-resistant weeds pose serious threats to agricultural production in New Zealand, with the number of resistant biotypes increasing almost fourfold since 1996 and spreading to different agricultural and non-agricultural sectors. Developing an effective herbicide resistance management strategy requires a good understanding of the extent of the problem and molecular and biochemical aspects of herbicide resistance.

Does Cover Crop Management Affect Arthropods in the Subsequent Corn and Soybean Crops in the United States? A Systematic Review

Gabriela Inveninato Carmona et al.

Summary: Cover crops have a positive impact on populations of pest and beneficial arthropods, but the specific effects depend on various factors. Studies suggest that cover crops can increase populations of beneficial arthropods, but may also lead to an increase in pests. Different cover crop species, management practices, and termination times have varying effects on arthropod activity.

Resistance to post-emergent herbicides is becoming common for grass weeds on New Zealand wheat and barley farms

Christopher E. Buddenhagen et al.

Summary: A random survey of 87 wheat and barley farms in the Canterbury region of New Zealand revealed that 48% of the farms had herbicide-resistant weeds, with 40% showing resistance to ALS-inhibitors and 23% showing resistance to ACCase-inhibitors. New Zealand's first documented cases of resistance in Phalaris minor (fenoxaprop, clodinafop, iodosulfuron) and Bromus catharticus (pyroxsulam) were identified during the survey.

Effect of hairy vetch cover crop on maize nitrogen supply and productivity at varying yield environments in Southern Brazil

Luan Pierre Pott et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of hairy vetch cover crop on successor maize yield and nitrogen status. The results showed that under low yield environments and low fertilizer N rates, using hairy vetch significantly increased maize yield and improved nitrogen status.

Integrated weed management with reduced herbicides in a no-till dairy rotation

Haleigh Summers et al.

Summary: Results suggest that reducing herbicide inputs and implementing an integrated approach for weed management in dairy crop rotations can be effective, but may lead to an increase in weeds over time.

Intensification of crop rotation affecting weed communities and the use of herbicides in the rolling Pampa

Elba B. de la Fuente et al.

Summary: The study found that promoting sustainable intensification by increasing cover crops, winter crops, cereal crops, and pastures in rotations can help manage weeds and reduce the use of herbicides. Despite a decrease in herbicide use as intensification increased, the species richness and abundance of weeds remained constant, indicating that different crop rotation methods filter out different weed communities.
