Organic Fertilizers Shape Soil Microbial Communities and Increase Soil Amino Acid Metabolites Content in a Blueberry Orchard

Yulan Tan et al.

Summary: The use of organic waste as a soil additive can improve soil nutrient levels and enhance soil quality. This study investigated the effects of composted spent mushroom substrate, giant panda feces, and cattle manure as organic fertilizers on soil microbial communities and metabolites. The results showed significant differences in microbial communities and metabolites between the organic fertilizer treatments and the control group, indicating that organic fertilizers can promote the production of low molecular-weight metabolites, such as amino acids.

Loss of microbial diversity weakens specific soil functions, but increases soil ecosystem stability

Xueling Yang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the relationship between soil functioning and microbial community diversity using dilution approach and nutrient supplementation. In a eutrophic environment, a decrease in microbial diversity delayed lindane degradation and methanogenesis, but exacerbated microbial respiration. Microbial co-occurrence networks became more stable with decreasing diversity, and were correlated with species richness and network complexity.

Contrasting effects of warming and N deposition on soil microbial functional genes in a subtropical forest

Qiufang Zhang et al.

Summary: Climate warming and nitrogen deposition have complex effects on soil microbial functional genes in subtropical forests, with warming alone not significantly impacting functional genes within four years. The combination of nitrogen addition and warming significantly increases the diversities and abundances of functional genes associated with carbon and nitrogen cycling, leading to accelerated soil nitrogen loss.

Structure and function of the soil microbiome underlying N2O emissions from global wetlands

Mohammad Bahram et al.

Summary: Wetland soils are the dominant source of N2O emissions, but the microbial players and processes involved are not well understood. This study found that the abundance of nitrifying archaea is a key factor explaining N2O emissions from wetland soils globally. Climate change and environmental changes may enhance the presence of these archaea and transform wetland soils into an even greater source of N2O.

Metagenomic insights into seasonal variations in the soil microbial community and function in a Larix gmelinii forest of Mohe, China

Tong Bao et al.

Summary: The study found that seasonal changes have a significant impact on the composition and function of soil microbiomes in a Larix gmelinii forest in Mohe, China. The diversity and activity of soil microbes are higher in spring and autumn, while they are inhibited in summer. Soil microbes in the Larix gmelinii forest exhibit lower adaptability in cold environments.

New insight into soil carbon fixation rate: The intensive co-occurrence network of autotrophic bacteria increases the carbon fixation rate in depositional sites

Zhongwu Li et al.

Summary: This study explored the relationship between autotrophic bacterial networks and carbon fixation ability in different soil erosion regions using random matrix theory-based molecular ecological network approach. The results showed that bacterial co-occurrence networks significantly influenced the carbon fixation rate and were associated with key abiotic factors such as pH and C: N. The findings contribute to a better understanding of microbial networks in carbon fixation function.

Temperature sensitivity of SOM decomposition is linked with a K-selected microbial community

Hui Li et al.

Summary: The temperature sensitivity (Q(10)) of soil organic matter (SOM) decomposition increases with mean annual temperature (MAT) but decreases with SOM bioavailability. The prevalence of K-strategy microbial communities in soil is associated with increased Q(10) values, indicating their important role in the decomposition of recalcitrant organic matter.

Loss of microbial diversity does not decrease γ-HCH degradation but increases methanogenesis in flooded paddy soil

Xueling Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of microbial diversity loss on the degradation of gamma-HCH and methanogenesis by artificially manipulating the soil microbiome. The presence of gamma-HCH delayed methanogenesis while dilution intensified the coupling between gamma-HCH degradation and methanogenesis. Bacterial community was more affected by dilution compared to archaea.
