Stress and eating behaviours in healthy adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Deborah Hill et al.

Summary: The meta-analysis found that stress has a small positive effect on overall food intake, with increased consumption of unhealthy foods and decreased consumption of healthy foods. Only one significant moderator (restraint on stress-unhealthy eating) was identified.

Chronic exposure to cafeteria-style diet in rats alters sweet taste preference and reduces motivation for, but not 'liking' of sucrose

Justine Fam et al.

Summary: This study found that diet-induced obesity significantly impacts rats' preference for sweet taste, but this is not due to differences in liking for the food.

Prenatal LPS exposure increases hippocampus IL-10 and prevents short-term memory loss in the male adolescent offspring of high-fat diet fed dams

Arthur Rocha-Gomes et al.

Summary: Offspring of high-fat diet fed dams showed increased hippocampus IL-6 levels and impaired short-term memories, while these effects were avoided in offspring exposed to prenatal LPS. Prenatal LPS exposure led to higher IL-10 levels, increased antioxidant activity, and no memory impairments in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex of the offspring.

Palmitoylethanolamide dampens neuroinflammation and anxiety-like behavior in obese mice

Adriano Lama et al.

Summary: High-fat diet leads to obesity and chronic low-grade inflammation, which can contribute to neuroinflammation and mood disorders. Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) has shown potential in reducing anxiety-like behavior, inflammation, and neurotransmitter imbalance associated with obesity-related neuropsychiatric comorbidities. PEA treatment improved anxiety-like behavior and reduced systemic inflammation in obese mice, and also modulated neurotransmitter levels in the amygdala.

LPS tolerance prevents anxiety-like behavior and amygdala inflammation of high-fat-fed dams' adolescent offspring

Arthur Rocha-Gomes et al.

Summary: Maternal high-fat diets can induce inflammation in the offspring's amygdala leading to anxiety-like behaviors, but LPS tolerance can reduce this inflammation. Combining LPS tolerance with high-fat maternal diet can attenuate anxiety-like behavior through an anti-inflammatory compensatory response.

Western diet as a trigger of Alzheimer's disease: From metabolic syndrome and systemic inflammation to neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration

Angelika Wieckowska-Gacek et al.

Summary: The studies suggest that an excess of saturated fatty acids and simple sugars in the diet is a known environmental risk factor of Alzheimer's disease. The systemic alterations induced by a Western diet, including metabolic changes, obesity, inflammation, may drive impairment of the blood-brain barrier and neuroinflammation, leading to neurodegeneration and cognitive impairment.

Caloric restriction or cafeteria diet from birth to adulthood increases the sensitivity to ephedrine in anxiety and locomotion in Wistar rats

Arthur Rocha-Gomes et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the nutritional status and behavioral responses of animals receiving different diets from birth, showing undernutrition in the CR group and obesity in the CAF group. Both groups exhibited lower anxiety-like behaviors after ephedrine application, indicating that the animal's nutritional status can enhance drug sensitivity.

Short-term high-fat diet induces cognitive decline, aggression, and anxiety-like behavior in adult zebrafish

Victor L. Picolo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of a high-fat diet on the central nervous system by examining its effects on various behaviors in zebrafish. The results show that short-term high-fat diet leads to obesity and altered behaviors such as increased aggression and anxiety-like responses. However, social preference behavior and swimming speed remain unaffected by high-fat diet.

Gut Microbiome Composition and Metabolic Status Are Differently Affected by Early Exposure to Unhealthy Diets in a Rat Model

Paolo De Marco et al.

Summary: The study found that consumption of sugary drinks and CAFD in early rat life alters the gut microbial community structure, affects metabolic activity, increases white adipose tissue, and has long-lasting negative effects on metabolic function. Unhealthy diet-fed groups also showed higher levels of glucose, total cholesterol, and creatinine serum compared to the control group.
