Critical windows of early-life microbiota disruption on behaviour, neuroimmune function, and neurodevelopment

Caoimhe M. K. Lynch et al.

Summary: Numerous studies have shown that the gut microbiota plays a crucial role in neurodevelopment and behavior. Early-life exposure to antibiotics has been associated with increased risk of immune and metabolic diseases. Targeted antibiotic-induced disruption of the microbiota during critical developmental periods has enduring effects on physiology and behavior. This study demonstrates that microbiota disruption during early life alters the structure and function of the caecal microbiome, as well as immune cells and neurophysiology in adolescence. However, the effects on behavior are limited and subtle, suggesting the importance of the gut microbiota during critical windows of development.

Short chain fatty acids: Microbial metabolites for gut-brain axis signalling

Kenneth J. O'Riordan et al.

Summary: The role of the intestinal microbiota in regulating gut-brain axis signaling has gained attention in recent years. Understanding the relationship between the gut microbiota, its metabolites, and the brain is crucial for developing new therapeutic approaches, including identifying psychobiotics. Current research focuses on the effects of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), such as butyrate, acetate, and propionate, on brain function, behavior, and physiology, and how these SCFAs enter the systemic circulation and can potentially impact the brain.

Antibiotic Treatment during Pregnancy Alters Offspring Gut Microbiota in a Sex-Dependent Manner

Abdullah M. Madany et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of antibiotics administered to pregnant dams on offspring gut microbiome composition and metabolic capabilities, and how these changes in the microbiota may influence their immune responses in both the periphery and the brain. The results show that the antibiotic cocktail significantly altered the diversity and taxonomy of the offspring's gut microbiota. Additionally, the predicted metabolic pathways were also significantly changed. In response to LPS immune challenge, the brains of the offspring showed decreased levels of innate inflammatory cytokines and chemokines. These findings suggest that maternal antibiotic use can have long-lasting effects on the gut microbiome and neuroimmune responses of offspring.

Gut microbiota composition is associated with newborn functional brain connectivity and behavioral temperament

Summary: The study found that the composition of gut microbiota is related to individual variability in brain network connectivity, which influences infant behavioral temperament, particularly negative emotionality. Additionally, virulence factors may be associated with differences in brain network connectivity linked to negative emotionality.

Dissecting the contribution of host genetics and the microbiome in complex behaviors

Shelly A. Buffington et al.

Summary: The core symptoms of many neurological disorders are thought to be caused by genetic variants affecting brain development and function. However, this study found that maladaptive behaviors may be interdependently regulated by the host genes and the microbiome. By selectively intervening with the microbiome, specific behavioral deficits can be rescued, which may change our understanding of neurological disorders.

Microbiota regulate social behaviour via stress response neurons in the brain

Wei-Li Wu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that microbiome modulates neuronal activity in specific brain regions of male mice to regulate stress responses and social behaviors. Social deviations in germ-free or antibiotic-treated mice are associated with elevated corticosterone levels, primarily produced by activation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis.

Effects of early-life penicillin exposure on the gut microbiome and frontal cortex and amygdala gene expression

Angelina Volkova et al.

Summary: The study established experimental systems to evaluate the impact of early-life exposure to antibiotics on the intestinal microbiota and gene expression in the brain. It found substantial changes in both microbiota population structure and composition, as well as transcriptomic alterations indicating pathways perturbed in neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders. Additionally, there were significant effects on gene expression in the frontal cortex and amygdala, with linkages identified between specific intestinal microbial populations and early-life expression of affected genes.

Summary: The use of antibiotics in childhood has been associated with dysbiosis of the gut microbiome and potential risk for various diseases. Factors affecting dysbiosis include changes in diversity, richness, and species composition. The duration and type of antibiotic exposure can also impact the changes in the microbiome.
