Neurologic manifestations of COVID-19 in critically ill patients: results of the prospective multicenter registry PANDEMIC

Konstantinos Dimitriadis et al.

Summary: This study characterized the prevalence, risk factors, and impact on outcome of neurologic manifestations in critically ill COVID-19 patients. The findings showed that neurologic disorders increased mortality and morbidity in these patients. The neurologic manifestations may be indirect sequelae of the infection or severe critical illness.

Neurological complications of COVID-19 in hospitalized patients: The registry of a neurology department in the first wave of the pandemic

Summary: This study described the spectrum of neurological complications in COVID-19 patients requiring a neurological assessment, with only 2.6% of hospitalized patients experiencing at least one complication. The most common diagnoses were neuromuscular disorders, cerebrovascular diseases, acute encephalopathy, and seizures. Mortality was higher in the cerebrovascular diseases group.

6-month consequences of COVID-19 in patients discharged from hospital: a cohort study (Publication with Expression of Concern. See vol. 401, pg. 90, 2023)

Chaolin Huang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the long-term health consequences of discharged COVID-19 patients and associated risk factors, particularly disease severity. Patients with more severe illness during hospitalization showed more severe impaired pulmonary diffusion capacities and abnormal chest imaging manifestations, highlighting the need for targeted interventions for long-term recovery.

Presentations and mechanisms of CNS disorders related to COVID-19

Summary: Patients with COVID-19 may experience a variety of central nervous system complications, including activation of inflammatory and thrombotic pathways, as well as direct viral effects in some cases. Critically ill patients may develop cognitive dysfunction in the setting of septic encephalopathy, likely due to multifactorial mechanisms.

Summary: This study describes the clinical features, risk factors, and outcomes of RCVS in a group of COVID-19 patients. The findings suggest that COVID-19 patients may be at risk for developing RCVS, especially with additional risk factors such as exposure to vasoactive agents. There was variability in symptoms and severity of COVID-19, clinical characteristics, imaging abnormalities, and mRS scores among the patients with RCVS.

Summary: SE is a neurological manifestation of SARS-CoV-2 infection, with age, time between acute respiratory phase of infection and SE onset, and hospitalization correlating with SE severity. The exact mechanisms linking SE and COVID-19 are not fully understood, but systemic inflammatory syndrome due to cytokine release may play a role.

Neurological update: COVID-19

A. L. Ren et al.

Summary: COVID-19 is primarily a respiratory disease, but can also lead to neurological complications. The main processes causing neurological damage include cerebrovascular disease, immunologically mediated neurological disorders, and the harmful effects of critical illness on the nervous system. While it is still uncertain if the virus directly invades the nervous system, the large number of infections at present suggests that nervous system infection may not be a significant issue.
