Apathy in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: systematic review and meta-analysis of frequency, correlates, and outcomes

Mansur A. Kutlubaev et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the frequency and correlates of apathy in ALS and its impact on the disease prognosis. The findings suggest that the emergence of apathy is associated with cognitive decline and bulbar onset of the disease. Additionally, ALS patients with apathy showed more prominent changes in structural and functional brain imaging. Apathy worsened the long-term prognosis of ALS.

Psychometrics and diagnostics of the Italian version of the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) in Parkinson's disease

Gianpaolo Maggi et al.

Summary: This study assessed the psychometric and diagnostic properties of the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) in an Italian Parkinson's disease (PD) cohort. The results showed that the BDI-II performed well in terms of internal consistency and construct validity, making it a reliable tool for screening depression in PD patients.

On the association between apathy and deficits of social cognition and executive functions in Huntington's disease

Rebecca K. Hendel et al.

Summary: This study investigates the association between executive and social cognitive dysfunction and apathy in Huntington's disease gene expansion carriers. The results show that apathy is significantly correlated with most executive test scores and the Emotion Hexagon social cognitive test score. This study is important for identifying apathy in Huntington's disease.

A shared cognitive and neural basis underpinning cognitive apathy and planning in behavioural-variant frontotemporal dementia and Alzheimer's disease

Peta Eggins et al.

Summary: This study investigated the cognitive and neural basis of apathy in behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). The results showed reduced planning ability in both conditions, and lower planning ability predicted increased cognitive apathy. Brain imaging analysis also revealed that atrophy in specific brain regions was associated with planning ability and cognitive apathy.

Validation of a short Italian version of the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-15) in non-clinical subjects: psychometric properties and normative data

Gianpaolo Maggi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS) in the Italian general population and provide normative data for clinical use. The results indicated that the shortened version of the BIS (BIS-15) showed almost identical psychometric properties as compared to the original scale, with reliable internal consistency and good convergent and divergent validity. The study also explored the influence of demographic variables on the BIS score and provided adjusting factors and a sensitive cutoff. The findings provide valuable insights for identifying individuals with clinical interest in impulsivity.

Apathy and impulsiveness in Parkinson disease: Two faces of the same coin?

Rosanna Palmeri et al.

Summary: Apathy and impulsiveness are common non-motor symptoms in Parkinson disease. This study aimed to investigate the presence of these symptoms, as well as other neuropsychiatric symptoms, in Parkinson disease patients. The results show that education and depression are important predictors of impulsiveness and apathy. This study highlights the importance of apathy and impulsiveness in Parkinson disease and suggests that future research should explore the role of other variables.

Italian version of the Starkstein Apathy Scale (SAS-I) and a shortened version (SAS-6) to assess pure apathy symptoms: normative study on 392 individuals

Elisabetta Garofalo et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop the Italian version of the Starkstein Apathy Scale and construct a shortened version focusing on pure apathy experiences. Results showed a significant education effect on scores, with highly educated participants scoring lower. A general cutoff score was proposed, and a new SAS-6 scale was developed.

Co-Occurrence of Apathy and Impulsivity in Progressive Supranuclear Palsy

Zi Q. Kok et al.

Summary: Apathy and impulsivity often co-exist in people with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), and they may share similar risk factors and etio-pathogenetic mechanisms. The co-occurrence of these neuropsychiatric features suggests the importance of jointly assessing and addressing them when planning symptomatic treatments for detrimental behavioral problems caused by PSP.

Apathy after stroke: Diagnosis, mechanisms, consequences, and treatment

Jonathan Tay et al.

Summary: Apathy is a common issue after stroke, affecting one out of three patients, but it is often clinically under-recognized and misdiagnosed. Research on the neurobiology of apathy suggests a lack of consistent associations between stroke lesion location and the development of apathy, calling for a network neuroscience approach to better understand this phenomenon.

The Apathy Evaluation Scale (AES-C): Psychometric Properties and Invariance of Italian Version in Mild Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimer's Disease

Giovanna Furneri et al.

Summary: Apathy is considered a neuropsychiatric symptom that can be observed in various neurological and psychiatric disorders. Recent studies have identified apathy as a three-dimensional syndrome comprising cognitive, affective, and behavioral symptoms, with it being considered a prodromal symptom of Alzheimer's disease and a potential indicator for transitioning from mild cognitive impairment to AD. The use of the Apathy Evaluation Scale (AES-C) has shown good reliability and validity in assessing apathy in both MCI and AD patients, with strong psychometric properties and invariance across different populations.
