Apathy in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: systematic review and meta-analysis of frequency, correlates, and outcomes

Summary: This study aimed to determine the frequency and correlates of apathy in ALS and its impact on the disease prognosis. The findings suggest that the emergence of apathy is associated with cognitive decline and bulbar onset of the disease. Additionally, ALS patients with apathy showed more prominent changes in structural and functional brain imaging. Apathy worsened the long-term prognosis of ALS.

On the association between apathy and deficits of social cognition and executive functions in Huntington's disease

Summary: This study investigated the cognitive and neural basis of apathy in behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). The results showed reduced planning ability in both conditions, and lower planning ability predicted increased cognitive apathy. Brain imaging analysis also revealed that atrophy in specific brain regions was associated with planning ability and cognitive apathy.

Validation of a short Italian version of the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-15) in non-clinical subjects: psychometric properties and normative data

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS) in the Italian general population and provide normative data for clinical use. The results indicated that the shortened version of the BIS (BIS-15) showed almost identical psychometric properties as compared to the original scale, with reliable internal consistency and good convergent and divergent validity. The study also explored the influence of demographic variables on the BIS score and provided adjusting factors and a sensitive cutoff. The findings provide valuable insights for identifying individuals with clinical interest in impulsivity.

Apathy and impulsiveness in Parkinson disease: Two faces of the same coin?

Summary: Apathy and impulsiveness are common non-motor symptoms in Parkinson disease. This study aimed to investigate the presence of these symptoms, as well as other neuropsychiatric symptoms, in Parkinson disease patients. The results show that education and depression are important predictors of impulsiveness and apathy. This study highlights the importance of apathy and impulsiveness in Parkinson disease and suggests that future research should explore the role of other variables.
