Natural history of most common spinocerebellar ataxia: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Alhassane Diallo et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis provides quantitative data on disease progression of the most common spinocerebellar ataxias, showing that progression is faster in SCA1, intermediate in SCA2 and SCA3, and slower in SCA6. There are differences in disease progression rates among SCA3 patients from different geographical locations.

Decreasing brain iron in multiple sclerosis: The difference between concentration and content in iron MRI

Ferdinand Schweser et al.

Summary: Increased brain iron concentration is commonly observed in multiple sclerosis (MS) and other neurodegenerative diseases, but it is unclear whether this is due to iron influx or reduction in tissue compartments. A study on tissue iron content in the deep gray matter (DGM) over 2 years found that MS patients had lower iron content in the thalamus compared to controls, and the iron content in DGM decreased in MS patients but tended to increase or remain stable in controls over the 2-year period. The declining DGM iron content in patients with MS suggests that iron is being removed from the DGM, contrary to previous understanding.
