Sodium butyrate attenuates rotenone-induced toxicity by activation of autophagy through epigenetically regulating PGC-1α expression in PC12 cells

Yi Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the role of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in rat dopaminergic PC12 cells treated with rotenone was investigated, and the potential mechanisms underlying the expression of PGC-1 alpha were explored. The results showed that sodium butyrate (NaB) protected cells against rotenone-induced toxicity by activating the autophagy pathway and reducing the expression of alpha-synuclein. Notably, NaB activated the autophagy pathway by upregulating PGC-1 alpha expression and promoting histone acetylation modification at the PGC-1 alpha promoter region.

CAGRepeat Size Influences the Progression Rate of Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 3

Summary: The length of the expanded CAG repeat in ATXN3 is a major determinant of clinical decline in SCA3/MJD, and combining this with residual age at onset as co-modifiers explains up to 47% of the interpatient variation in ICARS progression.

How biological sex of the host shapes its gut microbiota

Francesco Valeri et al.

Summary: The gut microbiota is a complex system that is influenced by various factors, including sex. Despite limited understanding of the mechanisms behind sex-related differences, it is suggested that sex hormones, dietary habits, and antibiotics may have a direct impact on the composition of the gut microbiota. More research is needed to fully grasp the role of sexual hormones, particularly testosterone, in shaping the gut microbiota.

Relationships of gut microbiota, short-chain fatty acids, inflammation, and the gut barrier in Parkinson's disease

Velma T. E. Aho et al.

Summary: This study found that intestinal inflammatory responses and reductions in fecal SCFAs occur in Parkinson's disease (PD), are related to the microbiota and to disease onset, and are not reflected in plasma inflammatory profiles. Some of these relationships are distinct in PD and are sex-dependent. This study revealed potential alterations in microbiota-host interactions and links between earlier PD onset and intestinal inflammatory responses and reduced SCFA levels.

Summary: This review sheds light on the crosstalk between sex hormones and the gut microbiome, demonstrating that sex differences influence the composition of the gut microbiome. The gut microbiome can be shaped by the hormonal environment, and bidirectional interactions with the hormonal system have been observed.

Neurodegenerative disorders and gut-brain interactions

Alpana Singh et al.

Summary: Neurodegenerative disorders (NDs) impact essential functions in both the central nervous system and the gut, with recent studies highlighting the importance of exploring the interaction between CNS, gut-innervating neurons, and gut-brain connecting neurons. Understanding the involvement of gut-innervating neurons and gut physiology in NDs is crucial for studying the etiology and progression of these disorders that cause progressive CNS and persistent gut dysfunction.

Summary: The study found that levels of several important butyrate-producing bacteria were lower in people with ALS compared to controls, which are crucial for gut integrity and inflammation regulation. These results support the inference that the gut microbiota may be a risk factor for ALS.
