Stereotactic radiosurgery for intracranial chordomas: an international multiinstitutional study

Stylianos Pikis et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the safety and efficacy of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) in the management of intracranial chordomas. The results showed that SRS is a relatively safe and effective adjuvant treatment option, with the best outcomes observed in young patients without significant neurological deficits.

The 2020 WHO Classification of Tumors of Bone: An Updated Review

Joon Hyuk Choi et al.

Summary: Bone tumors are rare and heterogeneous neoplasms that require accurate histologic diagnosis for appropriate management. Significant advances have been made since 2013 in understanding bone tumor molecular biology, classification, and treatment. The 2020 WHO classification provides updated schemes and criteria for diagnosis.

Poorly differentiated chordoma showing loss of SMARCB1/INI1: Clinicopathological and radiological spectrum of nine cases, including uncommon features of a relatively under-recognized entity

Bharat Rekhi et al.

Summary: Poorly differentiated chordomas are a newly recognized entity that displays a spectrum of features and aggressive outcomes. Timely diagnosis requires critical analysis of radiological and histopathological features, including necessary immunostains such as brachyury and SMARCB1/INI1. These tumors typically show loss of SMARCB1/INI1 immunostaining and homozygous deletion of the INI1/SMARCB1 gene, and are associated with a lower index of suspicion for diagnosis.

Long-term outcomes in the treatment of pediatric skull base chordomas in the endoscopic endonasal era

Michael M. McDowell et al.

Summary: Pediatric skull base chordoma is a rare disease with traditionally aggressive behavior and high risk of recurrence, but may have better outcomes than previously believed when managed with gross-total resection at a specialized center. Elevated Ki-67 levels may predict disease progression and de-differentiation. Patients who experience recurrence and mortality often require further treatment and may have poorer prognosis.

Local Control After Proton Therapy for Pediatric Chordoma

Daniel J. Indelicato et al.

Summary: This study reports the efficacy and toxicity of proton therapy among a cohort of 29 pediatric chordoma patients. Results showed that proton therapy is associated with a low risk of serious toxicity and high efficacy, particularly in well-differentiated tumors in pediatric patients with chordoma.

Multivariate Analysis and Validation of the Prognostic Factors for Skull Base Chordoma

Chubei Teng et al.

Summary: The study identified age, tumor size, surgery, primary site, and tumor stage as main factors affecting the prognosis of skull base chordoma. Resection of the tumor as much as possible while ensuring safety, combined with postoperative radiotherapy may be the optimum treatment for skull base chordoma.

An Integrated Management Paradigm for Skull Base Chordoma Based on Clinical and Molecular Characteristics

Hussein M. Abdallah et al.

Summary: Genotypic grouping by 1p36 and homozygous 9p21(p16) deletions can predict prognosis in SBC and guide management. GTR remains the cornerstone of SBC treatment and can be sufficient without AdjXRT in low and intermediate risk tumors. Low-risk tumors are associated with a less invasive phenotype, which makes them more amenable to GTR.
