Corner modes of the breathing kagome lattice: Origin and robustness

M. A. J. Herrera et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigate the non-trivial phase of a two-dimensional breathing kagome lattice, and find that the corner modes are not of higher-order topology. We also analyze the protection mechanism of the corner modes and identify the conditions under which they are pinned to zero energy. Additionally, using topological and symmetry markers, we identify the two breathing phases as adiabatically disconnected different obstructed atomic limits.

Experimentally Detecting Quantized Zak Phases without Chiral Symmetry in Photonic Lattices

Zhi-Qiang Jiao et al.

Summary: Symmetries play a crucial role in identifying topological phases and connecting protected edge states with topological bulk invariants through the bulk-boundary correspondence. One-dimensional lattices are believed to be protected by chiral symmetry, but this is not always the case. By experimentally detecting topological invariants in the bulk through continuous-time quantum walks of photons, it has been shown that inversion symmetry protects the quantized Zak phase but edge states may disappear in the topological nontrivial phase.

Nonlinear tuning of PT symmetry and non-Hermitian topological states

Shiqi Xia et al.

Summary: The study established a nonlinear non-Hermitian topological platform for active tuning of PT symmetry and topological states, revealing the interaction between sensitivity close to exceptional points and the robustness of non-Hermitian topological states. The research provides opportunities for unconventional light manipulation and device applications through single-channel control of global PT symmetry and topology via local nonlinearity.

Nonlinear second-order photonic topological insulators

Marco S. Kirsch et al.

Summary: Higher-order topological insulators represent a novel topological phase with boundary modes characterized by a unique co-dimension of at least two. Despite promising preliminary considerations, experimental research on these systems has been limited to linear evolution of topological states, with observation of the interplay between nonlinearity and dynamics of higher-order topological phases remaining elusive. However, experimental demonstration of nonlinear higher-order topological corner states and observation of soliton formation in such structures could pave the way for exploring topological properties of matter in the nonlinear regime and potentially lead to the development of compact devices harnessing the intriguing features of topology.

Nonlinear control of photonic higher-order topological bound states in the continuum

Zhichan Hu et al.

Summary: This study uncovered the interplay of nonlinearity, higher-order topology, and BICs in a photonic platform, where topological corner states that are also BICs were observed. The authors further demonstrated the nonlinear coupling of these states with edge modes under the action of self-focusing and defocusing nonlinearities. Theoretical calculations showed that a topological BIC can be actively tuned by nonlinearity in such a photonic HOTI, with potential applications in emerging topology-driven devices.

Orbital embedding and topology of one-dimensional two-band insulators

Jean-Noel Fuchs et al.

Summary: The topological invariants of one-dimensional inversion-symmetric insulators crucially depend on orbital embedding, with the position of orbitals within a unit cell playing a key role in determining the Z2 topological invariant θ. This study highlights how different orbital embedding configurations can lead to distinct topological phases in band insulators.

Exact higher-order bulk-boundary correspondence of corner-localized states

Minwoo Jung et al.

Summary: Our study demonstrates that the presence of a localized state at the corner of an insulating domain is not always related to a certain nontrivial higher-order topological invariant, despite appearing in the same Hamiltonian parameter space. Topological corner states may not be correlated with other well-established higher-order boundary observables, motivating further development for associating corner state existence with the higher-order topology of host materials.

Topological and geometrical aspects of band theory

J. Cayssol et al.

Summary: This paper provides a pedagogical introduction to recent developments in geometrical and topological band theory following the discovery of graphene and topological insulators. It explores the connection of these developments to contributions in high-energy physics by Dirac. The focus is on topological insulators and topological semi-metals, with specific examples of lattice versions of the Dirac equation in different space dimensions.
