Assessment of soil erosion hazard and factors affecting farmers? adoption of soil and water management measure: A case study from Upper Domba Watershed, Southern Ethiopia

Teshome Yirgu

Summary: This study aimed to assess the annual soil loss and factors affecting the adoption of soil and water conservation technologies in the Domba watershed in Ethiopia. The results showed that the watershed had significant soil erosion, with the Sule and Gana Kare-Woyza ridges contributing the majority of soil loss. Additionally, the study found that plot area, plot distance to residence, and perception of erosion problem were important factors influencing the adoption of improved soil and water conservation practices in the area.

Assessment of soil loss rate using GIS-RUSLE interface in Tashat Watershed, Northwestern Ethiopia

Mequanent Abathun Mengie et al.

Summary: Soil erosion is a persistent problem caused by deforestation, improper cultivation, uncontrolled grazing, and other anthropogenic activities. This study utilized remote sensing data and GIS to assess soil erosion in the Tashat watershed in the Abay basin, Ethiopia. The findings showed that the most affected areas by soil erosion are located in the steepest middle section of the watershed.

Land Use and Land Cover Change Assessment and Future Predictions in the Matenchose Watershed, Rift Valley Basin, Using CA-Markov Simulation

Markos Mathewos et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the dynamics of land use and land cover in the Matenchose watershed and predicts future land use changes up to 2050. The results show an increase in cultivated land and settlements, and a decrease in forestland and grassland. The conversion of other land use categories to cultivated land has a detrimental effect on soil erosion, while forestland and grassland play a crucial role in reducing soil loss.

Soil erosion assessment in the Blue Nile Basin driven by a novel RUSLE-GEE framework

Abdelrazek Elnashar et al.

Summary: This study utilized the RUSLE-GEE framework to analyze soil loss rates in the Blue Nile Basin, finding that around 27% of the area is at moderate to high risk of erosion. Downscaling precipitation data resolution significantly impacts rainfall erosivity and soil loss rates.

Summary: The study found that soil erosion rate in the Muga watershed has been increasing due to expansion of crop cultivation and loss of vegetation. Both future land use/land cover changes and climate change are projected to exacerbate soil loss issue, emphasizing the need for measures to mitigate the negative impacts.

Summary: This study utilized Landsat images and LCM to analyze the temporal and spatial dynamics of land use land cover in the Nashe watershed of Ethiopia, predicting a further decline in forest cover and expansion of agricultural land in the future. The main trend of future LULC change will be the conversion of forest areas, range land, and grass land into agricultural land.

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of land-use change on soil erosion in the Temeji watershed, finding that the conversion of grassland and forest into cultivated land leads to high soil loss, and over-exploitation of forest and grasslands for agricultural purposes is directly related to the severity of soil loss.

Potential Soil Loss Estimation and Erosion-Prone Area Prioritization Using RUSLE, GIS, and Remote Sensing in Chereti Watershed, Northeastern Ethiopia

Ajanaw Negese et al.

Summary: Soil erosion by water is a major issue in the Chereti watershed in Northeastern Ethiopia due to high rainfall, undulating topography, intensive cultivation, and lack of conservation measures. The study used RUSLE, GIS, and remote sensing to estimate the long-term soil loss, showing that 57.9% of annual soil loss came from 5 subwatersheds that require priority intervention for conservation planning. The integrated approach was found to be essential, cost-effective, and efficient for soil erosion estimation and prioritization of vulnerable areas for conservation efforts.

Soil erosion risk and sediment yield assessment with universal soil loss equation and GIS: in Dijo watershed, Rift valley Basin of Ethiopia

Bagegnehu Bekele et al.

Summary: Soil erosion is a major issue in Ethiopia, particularly in the Dijo watersheds. By using Geographic Information System and the Universal Soil Loss Equation, the study estimated soil erosion rates and identified hotspot areas for proper planning. The study found that most of the watershed areas had low soil erosion severity, but some areas in the upper parts showed moderate erosion, highlighting the need for conservation interventions. Policies focusing on reducing low and moderate soil erosion through various conservation methods are necessary to maintain land productivity. The integration of USLE and GIS proved to be effective in mapping soil erosion distribution across the watershed, offering valuable insights for land management strategies.
