Facile conversion of glycerol to 1,3-dihydroxyacetone by using mesoporous CuO-SnO2 composite oxide supported Au catalysts

Yi-Hu Ke et al.

Summary: In this study, mesoporous CuO-SnO2 composite oxides were prepared and used as supports for Au catalysts to achieve the selective oxidation of glycerol to 1,3-dihydroxyacetone (DHA) under base-free conditions. The catalyst with a Cu:Sn molar ratio of 3:1 showed the highest conversion rate of glycerol (100%) and selectivity for DHA (94.7%) at 80 degrees C and P-O2 = 1 MPa. The high catalytic activity was attributed to the small size and high dispersion of Au nanoparticles, interactions between Au nanoparticles and the support, synergistic effect between CuO and SnO2, and the amount of surface lattice oxygen species.

Selective Photoelectrocatalytic Glycerol Oxidation to Dihydroxyacetone via Enhanced Middle Hydroxyl Adsorption over aBi2O3-Incorporated Catalyst

Lan Luo et al.

Summary: This study reports a photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) glycerol oxidation method for the production of dihydroxyacetone (DHA) with enhanced selectivity. A heterogeneous photoanode consisting of Bi2O3 nanoparticles on TiO2 nanorod arrays was used, and the selectivity of DHA was increased. Experimental and theoretical studies revealed the interaction between the catalyst and glycerol, as well as the parallel pathways of the reaction. Furthermore, a self-powered PEC system was designed, achieving high productivity of DHA and H2.

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a ternary photoanode material was developed for the selective oxidation of glycerol to 1,3-dihydroxyacetone. The photoanode showed high selectivity and kinetic response, with hydroxyl radicals generated by water oxidation playing a dominant role as active oxygen species. The oxidation product obtained mainly came from water. The role of different components in enhancing the selectivity and catalyzing the reaction was revealed through spectroscopic and computational studies.

Predictive control of selective secondary alcohol oxidation of glycerol on NiOOH

McKenna K. Goetz et al.

Summary: For the valorization of biomass intermediates, selective alcohol oxidation is beneficial. This study demonstrates that NiOOH catalyst can selectively convert glycerol to 1,3-dihydroxyacetone by controlling the reaction conditions to favor secondary alcohol oxidation. The rational production method enables predictive control over selectivity without altering the catalyst composition.
