Iridium-incorporated Co3O4 with lattice expansion for energy-efficient green hydrogen production coupled with glycerol valorization

You Xu et al.

Summary: The iridium-incorporated Co3O4 (Ir-Co3O4) catalyst is synthesized from binary CoIr-based metal-organic framework precursors via controlled calcination treatment. The in situ incorporation of Ir cations leads to lattice expansion of Co3O4 and regulation of its electronic structure, which improves the electrocatalytic performance. With a lattice expansion-induced strain effect, the Ir-Co3O4 catalyst exhibits superior performance for both glycerol-to-formate conversion and the hydrogen evolution reaction.

Surface Engineering of Defective and Porous Ir Metallene with Polyallylamine for Hydrogen Evolution Electrocatalysis

Kai Deng et al.

Summary: This work presents the fabrication of polyallylamine-encapsulated Ir metallene with defects and a porous structure (Ir@PAH metallene) through a one-step wet chemical reduction method. The Ir@PAH metallene exhibits excellent performance in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), with low overpotential, a low Tafel slope, and almost no activity decay after stability test. The abundant defects and pores, as well as the nanosheet structures of Ir@PAH metallene, provide a large specific surface area, high conductivity, and efficient mass transport/diffusion. The surface-functionalized PAH molecules play a crucial role in modulating the electronic structure and capturing hydrogen ions, which is beneficial for HER in acidic media.

Advances in noble metal (Ru, Rh, and Ir) doping for boosting water splitting electrocatalysis

Lin Tian et al.

Summary: Electrochemical water splitting holds promise for producing high-density and green hydrogen, but the slow H2O dissociation process hinders industrial scale applications due to low H2O adsorption on catalyst surfaces. Efforts in exploring efficient approaches to fabricate electrocatalysts with appropriate H2O adsorption include defect engineering, interface engineering, and morphology design. Noble metal doping, particularly with metals like Ru, Rh, and Ir, plays a crucial role in optimizing the adsorption of reaction intermediates on catalyst surfaces, and has attracted significant research interest. This review highlights recent examples and mechanisms of noble metal doping in boosting water splitting electrocatalysis, along with challenges and future outlooks for practical applications.
