Summary: Transparent wood-based materials (TWMs) have gained significant attention due to their transparency, sustainability, and multifunctionality. TWMs produced using a top-down approach preserve the natural hierarchical structure of wood and offer high production efficiency and scalability. Various techniques, such as wood nanotechnologies and polymer impregnation, have been developed to fabricate TWMs with similar sustainability and optical transmittance. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the state-of-the-art for transparent wood and transparent wood films, highlighting the relationship between process, structure, property, and application perspectives in TWM science.

Summary: A reengineering approach is used to develop a high-strength and lightweight bio-composite material by fractionating natural wood into delignified wood (DW) and lignin, synthesizing a lignin-based epoxy resin (LER), and composting DW and LER. The newly developed wood-based composite exhibits improved hydrophobicity, antioxidation, thermal stability, and extraordinary mechanical properties surpassing many metal alloys.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of delignification on the plastic flow deformation of wood, and evaluates the effects of lignin's chemical structure, distribution, and molecular motility on wood deformability. The results show that delignified wood undergoes significant deformation at lower pressure without cell wall destruction. The deformability of wood increases with temperature and improves significantly as lignin near the polysaccharides in the cell wall is removed. The correlation between chemical and physicochemical properties and plastic flow deformability presented in this study is important for low-energy and highly productive formation of solid-state wood.

Summary: Researchers have developed high-performance tactile sensors based on bioinspired structures/functions, natural biopolymers, and biomimetic strategies, inspired by the concepts and design principles evident in natural materials and structures. However, the main challenge lies in developing novel sensing mechanisms and device structures that are sufficiently sensitive and stretchable using bioinspired materials. In this review, we discuss recent advancements in this field, focusing on biomimetic approaches to producing tactile sensors with essential sensing capabilities and the development of bioinspired materials with desired electrical and mechanical properties. Additionally, we highlight the potential applications of these devices and discuss future directions for research.
