Engineering immunomodulatory and osteoinductive implant surfaces via mussel adhesion-mediated ion coordination and molecular clicking

Tao Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a dual-effect coating was designed to modulate the osteoimmune microenvironment and enhance bone regeneration. The coating, which immobilized immunomodulatory metal ions and osteoinductive growth factors, significantly increased the recruitment of M2 macrophages and upregulated the expression of M2 cytokines. This led to improved bone-implant mechanical fixation and new bone ingrowth.

Sulfur-regulated defect engineering for enhanced ultrasonic piezocatalytic therapy of bacteria-infected bone defects

Jie Lei et al.

Summary: This study successfully constructs an ultrasound-responsive sulfur-doped barium titanate piezocatalyst, which exhibits excellent performance in antibacterial activity and bone regeneration. The optimal amount of sulfur doping enhances the piezoelectric properties and antibacterial effectiveness of the catalyst, while promoting osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow stem cells through the TGF-beta signaling pathway. Activated by ultrasound, the catalyst effectively treats infected bone defects and promotes bone regeneration.

Wound healing, fibroblast heterogeneity, and fibrosis

Heather E. Talbott et al.

Summary: Fibroblasts are important cells in tissue repair and fibrosis, but our understanding of the mechanisms by which they contribute to extracellular matrix deposition and remodeling is limited. This review discusses the current state of fibroblast biology and heterogeneity, with a focus on their role in skin wound repair, and evaluates the limitations of existing techniques and knowledge. The review highlights the critical functions of fibroblasts, a often overlooked cell type, in wound repair and other processes.
