Designing energetic covalent organic frameworks for stabilizing high-energy compounds

Yansong Shi et al.

Summary: A novel strategy to design and construct energetic covalent organic frameworks (COFs) is proposed in this study. ECOF-1, a two-dimensional crystalline COF assembled from triaminoguanidine salt, has been successfully prepared. ECOF-1 exhibits superior thermal stability, insensitivity, and inhibits the corrosiveness of NTO. Energetic COFs are promising as a functional platform to design high-energy and insensitive energetic materials.

Metallization-Prompted Robust Porphyrin-Based Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks for Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

Qi Yin et al.

Summary: This study successfully prepared a series of metalloporphyrinic hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) with high surface area and excellent stability by introducing a transition metal which caused noticeable changes on noncovalent interaction, orbital overlap, and molecular geometry. These metalloporphyrinic HOFs were then used as photocatalysts for the photoreduction of CO2 to CO.

Two-Dimensional Anisotropic Flexibility of Mechanically Responsive Crystalline Cadmium(II) Coordination Polymers

Mateja Pisacic et al.

Summary: This article presents the crystal structure and mechanical properties of a family of one-dimensional coordination polymers, which exhibit two-dimensional anisotropic flexibility. The study reveals that the relative strength and direction of hydrogen bonding interactions play a crucial role in determining the mechanical response.

Rational tuning of thorium-organic frameworks by reticular chemistry for boosting radionuclide sequestration

Han Feng et al.

Summary: The reticular chemistry strategy provides a powerful tool for designing molecules to tailor the physical and chemical properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). In this study, researchers investigated the impact of organic ligands on the radionuclide sequestration of thorium-organic framework, resulting in the creation of two novel isoreticular thorium-organic frameworks - Th-MOF-67 and Th-MOF-68. These new MOFs showed significantly enhanced uptake of ReO4- compared to the previous MOF, with Th-MOF-68 exceeding most reported adsorbents in terms of adsorption capacity.

Hydrogen-bonded metal-nucleobase frameworks for highly selective capture of ethane/propane from methane and methane/nitrogen separation

Ying Liu et al.

Summary: This work presents two hydrogen-bonded metal-nucleobase frameworks capable of efficiently separating C3H8/CH4, C2H6/CH4, and CH4/N-2. The frameworks exhibit strong affinity for C3H8 and C2H6, and show excellent performance in CH4 adsorption and CH4/N-2 selectivity. These findings are of great importance for natural gas upgrading and the concentration of low-quality coalbed methane.

An elastic metal-organic crystal with a densely catenated backbone

Wenjing Meng et al.

Summary: The study reports a three-dimensional porous metal-organic crystal with exceptional structure connected only by catenation, showing dynamic geometry changes upon different conditions. The crystal has low Young's moduli and high deformability, especially along its c axis. This mechanically interlocked molecule-based design could lead to the development of porous materials with exotic mechanical properties, such as squeezable porous crystals.

Two flexible cationic metal-organic frameworks with remarkable stability for CO2/CH4 separation

Shulin Li et al.

Summary: Two stable isomorphic cationic MOFs were synthesized, displaying flexible features, and the effects of different activation methods on their structural flexibility were explored. Continuous phase transformation of one MOF was verified by powder X-ray diffraction, showing higher gas separation abilities.

Mechanical Bending and Modulation of Photoactuation Properties in a One-Dimensional Pb(II) Coordination Polymer

Bibhuti Bhusan Rath et al.

Summary: As research on stimuli-responsive materials progresses, dynamic crystals are leading the investigation, while studies on the mechanical properties of coordination polymers (CPs) are still in their infancy. The report of one-dimensional CP with unique properties provides a new avenue for designing CPs with multi-stimuli-responsive actuating properties.

Elastic ice microfibers

Peizhen Xu et al.

Summary: Ice grown as single-crystal ice microfibers (IMFs) exhibits high elasticity and can be reversibly bent at low temperatures. A pressure-induced phase transition of ice from Ih to II was observed on the compressive side of sharply bent IMFs. The high optical quality of these flexible ice fibers opens up opportunities for low-loss optical waveguiding and whispering-gallery-mode resonance.

Exploring the diversity of elastic responses of crystalline cadmium(II) coordination polymers: from elastic towards plastic and brittle responses

Mateja Pisacic et al.

Summary: The study of mechanical responses of one-dimensional crystalline coordination polymers of cadmium(II) revealed that different compounds exhibit varying elastic responses to external mechanical force, with some displaying elastic-plastic behavior and others showing only slight elastic responses, indicating poorer adaptability to mechanical stimuli. This behavior was attributed to the interaction energies and Young's moduli, wherein stronger interactions led to higher Young's modulus values, resulting in stiffer crystals with reduced adaptability to external mechanical stimuli.

Summary: The quasi single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation of a hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) was accurately revealed in this study, with the proposed mechanism indicating the involvement of Br/π interaction. This interaction allowed for the successful resolution of the intermediate phase of the crystal structure.
